Why do you want to work at this bank?
Give two or three reasons specific to this bank, like its strength in a sector you care about or the group's recent deals. Prove each with a conversation, who you spoke with and what you learned. Then say how you would contribute as an analyst.

I spent last summer in corporate development at a building products distributor that bought two small competitors. This bank has a great reputation in M&A, and I want to learn from the best.
First, the people. I've spoken with four of your analysts and an associate since September. Everyone was friendly and very smart.
Second, the work. Your industrials group does the kind of deals I'm interested in.
So it's the people I'd learn from and the deals I care about.
What holds it back
Reputation, smart people and strong deal flow describe every bank the interviewer has heard candidates praise. The summer in corporate development is mentioned and then never used.
I spent last summer in corporate development at a building products distributor that bought two small competitors. That's behind all three of my reasons. First, the people. I've spoken with four of your analysts and an associate since September. They told me analysts here get real responsibility early, and they seemed to like their teams. Second, the work. We were the buyer on both deals, and I saw how much the seller's bankers shaped each process. Your industrials group advises founder-owned sellers of that size, which is the seat I want. Third, what I'd bring. I modeled both acquisitions, so I know how a buyer thinks about a business like these. So it's the people I'd learn from, the deals I care about, and a team where what I've done is useful early.
I spent last summer in corporate development at a building products distributor that bought two small competitors. That's behind all three of my reasons. First, the people. I've spoken with four of your analysts and an associate since September. I asked each of them what happens when an analyst is on three live deals at once. All five gave me the same answer, that the associate goes to the staffer before the analyst has to. One analyst said she presented her own pages to a client's CFO in her first year. That's the training I'm looking for. Second, the work. We were the buyer on both deals, and I saw how much the seller's bankers shaped each process. They decided what we saw, when we saw it and how fast we had to bid. Your industrials group advises founder-owned sellers of that size, which is the seat I want. Your associate walked me through how the group runs a sale, with no client names, and it matched what I sat across from. Third, what I'd bring. I modeled both acquisitions, including the cost savings case, and I read eleven sale memos that summer, so I know how a buyer thinks about a business like these, down to which pages it skips and which it reads twice. On a small deal team, that's useful from the first draft. So it's the people I'd learn from, the deals I care about, and a team where what I've done is useful early.
What the interviewer listens for
- Could you give this answer at the bank across the street without changing a word?
- Who have you spoken to here, and what did you ask them?
- Does the group or deal type you name connect to something you've done?
- What would you add to the team in the first year?
Common mistakes
- Leading with league tables, prestige or deal flow. The interviewer already knows the bank's standing and learns nothing about you from hearing it repeated.
- Quoting a deal or a fact about the bank from a news article you skimmed, then being unable to answer the first follow-up question about it.
- Saying the people were smart and nice without one thing a named analyst or associate told you that changed how you saw the bank.
- Listing only what the bank would do for you, with nothing about what you'd contribute to the group you say you want.
More behavioral and fit
- What do you think an investment banking analyst actually does all day?
- Do you have any questions for me?
- Why do you want to go into consulting?
- Why do you want to work at this firm?
- Why do you want to go into investment banking?
