How HireVue works, and how to prepare

HireVue is the video interview software many employers use for an early interview round. In an on-demand interview you record answers to the employer's questions on your own time, and in a live interview you meet the employer's interviewers on a scheduled video call. Try one first with our free HireVue practice tool: timed questions on your own camera, no sign-up, and the video stays in your browser.

Updated

  • There are two formats. On-demand means you record alone before a due date. Live is a scheduled video call with the employer.
  • Each employer sets its own timing. The questions, prep time, answer time, tries and due date all vary. Your invitation and the first screens show them.
  • Some employers add AI scoring. It works from a transcript of what you say, with no facial analysis, by HireVue's account. People at the employer decide.

How HireVue works

HireVue makes the interview software. The company you applied to sets up the interview, picks the questions and decides who moves on. Your invitation says which kind of interview you have.

On-demand

You record answers to the employer's questions alone, on your own time.

  1. What it is

    You record, the employer reviews

You answer the employer's questions on a computer, tablet or phone, whenever suits you before the deadline. Someone at the company reviews the recordings.

  2. Answer types

    Mostly video

Most questions need a recorded video answer. Some employers add a written essay or multiple choice questions.

  3. The clock

    Prep time, then answer time

Each question shows a prep countdown, then a response countdown. The employer sets both. You can start recording early and click Done Answering before the time is up.

  4. Retakes

    Set by the employer

A screen before your first question shows how many attempts you get. Once you submit an answer you can't go back to it. A fresh interview needs the employer's approval.

  5. Practice

    Three practice questions

Generic questions you can redo as often as you like and watch back. They are never uploaded, and nobody else sees them.

  6. Integrity checks

    Set by the employer

Employers can turn on browser and screen checks, flags when you leave the interview window, paste blocking and snapshots. HireVue's integrity page says these are explained before you start.

  7. Due date

    The link expires

Your invitation gives a due date or a suggested window. After the due date the link stops working. Ask the employer if you need more time.

Live interviewsScheduled call
  1. What it is

    A real-time video call

You meet someone from the hiring company at a set time, much like any video call. It is also your chance to ask them questions.

  2. Before

    Run the system test

The invitation has your time and a system test link. HireVue suggests running the test at least 24 hours ahead. Double-check the time zone.

  3. Screen sharing

    On a computer only

A live interview has a Screenshare button for showing your screen to the interviewer. It works only on a desktop or laptop.

AI InterviewerSome employers
  1. What it is

    A two-way conversation

Some employers use HireVue's AI Interviewer. It asks the employer's questions, follows up on your answers and records them.

  2. Scoring

    Against the employer's criteria

It rates each answer against criteria set for the role and explains why. Recruiters see the scores and make the call.

  3. Your options

    Consent and opt-out

Candidates give consent to AI and can ask for accommodations or an AI opt-out, according to that product page. Human support stays available.

Games and codingIf your employer adds them
  1. Games

    Short online games

Some interviews include game-based assessments: a short series of games, each under 20 minutes. HireVue lists skills such as problem solving, attention, memory and learning agility.

  2. How they run

    Instructions first

Each game opens with an instruction video. You see the level and the time left, and you can pause to reread the instructions. You move up or down levels depending on how you do.

  3. Device

    If a game looks blurry

On Windows in Chrome or Edge, try the HireVue for Candidates app, Firefox or Safari, or turn off hardware acceleration.

  4. Coding

    Coding challenges

Some employers add a coding assessment. HireVue offers challenges in popular programming languages, from its own library or written by the employer, and checks submissions for possible plagiarism.

What HireVue says it evaluates

Every interview goes to the employer to review. Some employers also add a HireVue assessment that scores the answers. This is how HireVue describes it.

  • Skills for the job

Video assessments look at what you know about the job and at skills like communication, problem solving, teamwork and initiative. The competencies come from organizational psychologists' research on what matters in that role.

  • Your words, as a transcript

For AI-scored answers, your speech is turned into text and the content is scored against the role's criteria. Facial expressions, body language, appearance, background and tone of voice are not scored.

  • No facial analysis

Visual analysis was removed from all new assessments early in 2020, HireVue announced in 2021. Your video is never used to identify you.

  • Whole answers

An assessment considers the whole context of a response, beyond certain words here or there.

  • Built for one role

Each assessment model is made for one job role, and many for one employer. There is no single perfect candidate you are measured against.

  • People decide

The AI informs recruiters, and they make the final call. An answer with too few words to score is flagged for a person to review.

What to expect, step by step

An on-demand HireVue on a computer, as HireVue's help center lays it out. The phone app follows the same order.

From the invitation to the review
  1. The invitation

    Open your link

Click Practice or Interview in the email. HireVue recommends Chrome. The email also gives your due date or window.

    HireVue: on-demand walkthrough

  2. First screens

    What the interview holds

You see the company, the role, the number and types of questions and an estimated time. If you need more time because of a disability, the first page has a link to request it.

    HireVue: accommodations

  3. Setup

    Terms, camera and microphone

Accept the terms and allow camera and microphone access. Check that you can see yourself and that the mic meter moves when you talk. Then a screen shows your attempts per question.

  4. Practice

    Practice mode

A blue ribbon marks it. Answer, watch it back, fix your light or sound and go again. You can also close the window and return later with the same link.

  5. Each question

    Prep, then record

The question shows with a prep countdown and a Not Recording note. A three-second countdown starts the recording, either when prep time ends or when you click Start Recording.

  6. If you drop out

    Reopen the same link

You return to your last unanswered question. An answer you were in the middle of may already be submitted. Finish the interview and tell the employer.

  7. After

    The employer reviews

The recruiter is notified when you finish, and the hiring team reviews your answers. HireVue has no view of your application status, so ask the employer.

What the questions feel like, in 4 examples

Employers write their own questions. These four follow the kinds HireVue's candidate FAQ describes, plus the why this job question employers often ask. Our full list, with notes, is on our HireVue questions page.

Past behavior1 question

A real story about something you did.

  1. Tell me about a time you achieved something difficult against real obstacles.

Show what a strong answer does

Pick one story with a clear obstacle. Spend most of the time on what you did, and end on the result, in a number if you have one. Practice it, see a model answer

Situational judgment1 question

What you would do in a situation you haven't faced.

  1. Your manager asks you to drop your project for another team's urgent request. What do you do?

Show what a strong answer does

Say what you would ask first, the call you would make and how you would keep both people in the loop.

Scenario simulation1 question

You act the answer out instead of describing it.

  1. A customer is upset that a delivery is late. Speak to them now as you would on the job.

Based on the angry customer example in HireVue's candidate FAQ

Show what a strong answer does

Talk to the customer directly. Acknowledge the problem, say what you will do and by when, and keep your tone calm.

Motivation1 question

Why this job and this employer.

  1. Why do you want this role, and why with us?

Show what a strong answer does

Give two reasons that only fit this employer, and tie each one to something you have already done.

How to prepare

How to prepare for a HireVue

HireVue's own tips come first. The last two are ours.

  1. HireVue's tip

    Study the job description

Research the role and the company. Have real examples ready for the skills the job description asks for.

    HireVue candidate FAQ

  2. HireVue's tip

Write a list of short stories

Challenges you faced, the approach you took and the results, from work or school. Get comfortable telling them. Your notes can sit next to you.

  3. HireVue's tip

    Set up your space

A quiet room, light in front of you, a charged device and a connection of at least 350 Kbps. Put your video window near the top center of the screen, so looking at it reads as eye contact.

  4. HireVue's tip

    Log in early

Run the system check ahead of time, then close the window and come back when you're ready. Do the practice questions before the real ones.

  5. HireVue's tip

    Pick your sharpest hour

Most video assessments take 20 to 30 minutes or less. Set aside 45, at the time of day you feel most alert.

  6. Our tip

    Rehearse on the clock

Answer out loud with a prep timer and an answer timer, then watch yourself back. About two minutes per answer is a good target unless your invitation says otherwise.

  7. Our tip

    Practice the follow-ups

Live interviews and the AI Interviewer can ask follow-up questions. Rehearse with an interviewer who asks them, so each story holds up past the first answer.

Questions people ask

Can HireVue see my screen or tell if I switch tabs?

Employers can turn on browser and screen checks, focus-loss flags, paste blocking and snapshots, and HireVue's integrity page says they are explained before you start. Assume leaving the window will be flagged. A live interview also has a Screenshare button for showing your screen to the interviewer, on a desktop or laptop only.

Can HireVue detect ChatGPT?

Don't use it to answer. Deutsche Bank's candidate FAQ, for one, strongly recommends not using AI tools for its video interview questions. Employers can have HireVue flag pasting and leaving the interview window, so answer in your own words. HireVue does not publish a tool that detects ChatGPT itself.

Can the employer see all my attempts?

HireVue does not publish whether employers see the takes you recorded over. The employer sets the number of attempts, shown before your first question, and HireVue's recommended setting for AI-scored interviews is one or two retries after the first try. Practice answers are never uploaded.

Does HireVue still analyze facial expressions?

No, by HireVue's own account. In January 2021 it said it had removed visual analysis from all its new assessments early in 2020. Its science page now says it does not use facial analysis to evaluate candidates, and AI-scored answers are based on what you say. It never uses your video to identify you.

Does HireVue's AI decide if I get the job?

No. The AI supports recruiters and does not make the hiring decision. The employer reviews your interview and decides who moves on. For most jobs, the people who pass this first step go on to interviews with people before anyone is hired.

Can I use notes in a HireVue?

HireVue's interview tips say yes: write a list of brief stories and keep your notes next to you in case you need a reminder. Some employers set their own rules, so check your invitation.

What do HireVue Insights mean?

There are two things with that name. A Candidate Insights report is something some employers send you after an assessment. It describes your work-related competencies with tips for development, and getting one does not mean a decision has been made. Interview Insights is a recruiter tool that makes AI summaries and searchable transcripts of interviews.

Is Soreno affiliated with HireVue?

No. Soreno is an independent practice tool, not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by HireVue or any employer named on this page. The practice questions are Soreno's own.
