Bank HireVue Interviews: What Each Bank Says, Plus Practice
What Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley, BlackRock and Deutsche Bank say about their video interviews, with timings and 20 practice questions.

Most large banks now put a recorded video interview between your application and your first conversation with a person. You get a question on screen, a short time to think, and a few minutes to record an answer. Nobody is on the other side. This guide sets out what each bank says about its own video interview, quoted from the banks' careers pages in October 2026, how the HireVue platform works according to HireVue, and 20 questions to practice with the timings the banks publish.
Who wrote this. We make Soreno, an AI interviewer for finance and consulting interviews. We are not affiliated with HireVue or any bank named here. Every statement about a bank's process is quoted from that bank's own careers pages, read on 13 October 2026 and linked. The practice questions are ours, written for practice. They are not a bank's questions.
What each bank says
| Firm | What its own page says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Goldman Sachs | "If your application is selected, you will be asked to participate in a video interview, which will take approximately 30 minutes to complete." Then: "If selected following your HireVue interview, you'll be invited to a series of final round interviews. Typically, we conduct between two and five interviews for campus hires, depending on the division." | Goldman Sachs: prepare |
| Bank of America | For US and Canada programs: "You'll have 30 seconds to prepare a response and up to three minutes to respond." "We are unable to ask any follow-up questions." "You can expect to use at least 1:45 per response." "The questions are primarily behavioral and open ended." The interview takes "~20-30 minutes." | Bank of America: application process |
| JPMorgan Chase | "For certain job opportunities, you may be required to take an on-demand/recorded video interview to evaluate your skills such as language proficiency, verbal presentation and/or technical abilities." It "utilizes interviewing technology that presents questions and allows you to record your responses." | JPMorgan Chase: how we hire, FAQs |
| Morgan Stanley | Video interviews, "whether live or in a recorded session," are part of "the application and screening process" for more roles, "including those in Morgan Stanley's North America and Asia offices." | Morgan Stanley: 10 tips for a successful video interview |
| BlackRock | The pre-interview assessment is "a short video response." "For each question, you'll have up to three minutes respond. The entire process takes less than 15 minutes and must be completed in one sitting within five days of submitting your application." Once submitted, "it cannot be retaken." | BlackRock: candidate FAQs, Americas |
| Deutsche Bank | "After you see each question you will be provided with two minutes to prepare your response. You then have two minutes to record your responses and just have the one attempt." Used "for some roles in our UK, German and APAC regions." | Deutsche Bank: your application, FAQ |
Three things to read carefully in that table:
- The timings differ. Bank of America gives 30 seconds to prepare and up to three minutes to answer. Deutsche Bank gives two minutes and two minutes, with one attempt. BlackRock gives up to three minutes per answer. Check your own invitation: it states the timing for your interview.
- JPMorgan and Morgan Stanley do not name the platform on the pages above. Goldman Sachs names HireVue, Bank of America names "the HireVue platform" in the Asia Pacific section of its page, and BlackRock sends technical questions to HireVue's support line.
- Deadlines are firm where they are stated. BlackRock says an application "will automatically be withdrawn from consideration" if the assessment is not submitted by the deadline, and that you cannot reapply for the same opportunity.
How a HireVue on-demand interview works
These points come from HireVue's own candidate help pages.
- You can practice first, and it does not count. HireVue says practice questions "are available for OnDemand Interviews only" and that opening them "should not start your interview." It adds: "We highly recommend trying a couple of practice questions until you feel comfortable with the interview process."
- The number of attempts is the employer's choice. "The number of attempts you will have is set up by the hiring company, so this screen may vary with each interview." Assume one attempt until the screen tells you otherwise.
- You see the question, then a countdown. In HireVue's walkthrough, the question appears with "the prep time countdown at the top of your screen," and recording starts when the prep time ends or when you click to start early.
- A dropped connection is not the end. "If you do lose connection in the middle of your assessment, you'll be able to pick up where you left off with the same link."
- Use Chrome. "We recommend you take your interview on Google Chrome."

What the banks tell candidates to do
Bank of America publishes the most detailed advice:
- "Use those 30 seconds to consider what points you want to include in your response."
- Because there are no follow-up questions, "be sure to consider how or why you did or would do something."
- "Notes are okay." But "avoid reading straight from the page like a script."
- If you are interrupted, "be prepared to keep going!"
Morgan Stanley's recruiters add:
- Reading from a script is "probably the most common bad habit we see." Put reminders on a sticky note at eye level instead.
- "Don't feel as if you have to use up all the time allotted. Short, concise answers are best."
- A recorded interview is "where they can demonstrate their current knowledge of the markets."
Deutsche Bank asks candidates not to use AI tools to answer: "We are looking for authenticity in your responses."
20 practice questions
Written by Soreno for practice. They follow what the banks say they ask: mostly behavioral and open-ended questions, your motivation for the firm and the program, and for some roles your knowledge of the markets and technical ability.
Motivation
- Why do you want to work in investment banking?
- Why this bank, and not one of its competitors?
- Why this division or program?
- Walk me through your resume in two minutes.
- What do you expect an analyst's first year to be like?
Behavioral
- Tell me about a time you worked in a team under a tight deadline.
- Tell me about a time you had to learn something difficult quickly.
- Describe a time you disagreed with a teammate. What did you do?
- Tell me about a mistake you made and what you changed afterwards.
- Give an example of a time you led without having the title.
- Tell me about a time you had to manage several priorities at once.
- Describe a time you received critical feedback.
Markets and judgment
- Tell me about a deal or a market story you have followed recently. Why did it interest you?
- Where do you think interest rates are heading, and what does that mean for our clients?
- Pick a company you admire. Would you invest in it today?
- What is one trend that will change this industry over the next five years?
Technical, for roles that test it
- Walk me through the three financial statements.
- What are the main ways to value a company?
- What is the difference between enterprise value and equity value?
- Walk me through a DCF.
Example answers for the technical ones, built up from a weak version to a strong one: the three statements, valuing a company, enterprise value vs equity value and walk me through a DCF. For motivation: why investment banking.
How to practice for a recorded interview
- Use the published timing. Set a timer for 30 seconds to think and three minutes to answer, the format Bank of America publishes for its US and Canada programs. Then repeat at two minutes and two minutes.
- Record yourself and watch it back. A recorded interview has no one nodding at you. The first few recordings feel strange; the tenth does not.
- Answer in three parts. The point in one sentence, the evidence (what you did, with one number if you have it), and what it means for the role. Since no one can ask a follow-up, say the "how" and the "why" yourself.
- Aim for 90 seconds to two minutes. Bank of America says to expect to use at least 1:45. Morgan Stanley says short, concise answers are best. Both point to the same range.
- One sticky note, not a script. Three words per story, at eye level.
- Do the platform's own practice questions on the day. They check your camera and sound, and they do not count.
After the video interview
At Goldman Sachs the next stage is a series of final round interviews, typically "between two and five interviews for campus hires, depending on the division." Bank of America says its final round "will vary slightly for each line of business but will typically include interviews conducted by representatives from the business area you are applying to." That is where the technical questions get harder: see our investment banking technical questions and the three statement accounting questions.
FAQ
Does Goldman Sachs use HireVue?
Yes. Goldman Sachs' careers site says selected applicants "participate in a video interview, which will take approximately 30 minutes to complete," and refers to it as "your HireVue interview."
How long do you get to answer a HireVue question at Bank of America?
Bank of America says: "You'll have 30 seconds to prepare a response and up to three minutes to respond."
Does JPMorgan use recorded video interviews?
JPMorgan Chase says that for certain job opportunities you may be required to take an "on-demand/recorded video interview." Its FAQ page does not name the platform.
Can you redo a HireVue answer?
It depends on the employer. HireVue says the number of attempts "is set up by the hiring company." Deutsche Bank, for example, states that you "just have the one attempt."
Are HireVue questions technical or behavioral?
Mostly behavioral for early-career roles. Bank of America says its questions "are primarily behavioral and open ended." JPMorgan says a recorded interview may evaluate "verbal presentation and/or technical abilities," so technical questions are possible for some roles.
Can you practice before a HireVue interview?
Yes. HireVue offers practice questions before an on-demand interview begins, and says they do not start the interview.
