• Do you give a clear reason banking fits better than each alternative?
• Do you know what the other jobs involve, ideally from experience?
• Are you respectful of consulting and private equity?
• Are you honest about buy-side interest without leading with it?

Common mistakes

• Running down consulting or private equity.The interviewer may have worked in either, and it sounds like you don't understand them.
• Saying banking is just the route to private equity.It may be part of the truth, but it's no reason for this bank to hire you.
• Claiming no interest in the buy side at all, which few interviewers believe.
• Saying you like finance more, without saying what's different about the work itself.

• So do you want to go to private equity after two years?Maybe, and I won't know until I've done this job. What I'm sure of is that I want my first years in banking.
• If a consulting firm made you an offer, would you take it?No. I'm recruiting for banking only, because the transaction work is what I want, and my summer in consulting is what showed me that.
