HireVue interview questions and how to answer them

Most HireVue questions ask about your past behavior, what you would do in a new situation, or why you want the job. You record each answer alone, and the employer sets the think time, the answer time and how many tries you get.

Updated

  • Recorded or live. On-demand means you record alone before a deadline. Live is a scheduled video call.
  • The employer sets the clock. Bank of America gives 30 seconds and up to three minutes. Deutsche Bank gives two and two.
  • Tries are shown up front. Once an answer is submitted you cannot go back to it.
  • Practice is unlimited. Three generic practice questions that nobody else ever sees.
  • Five to eight questions. HireVue says most take under 20 to 30 minutes. Set aside 45.

How a HireVue interview works

In HireVue's own words, from its candidate pages and help center.

  • On-demand or live

On-demand means you answer the employer's questions on your own time and your answers are recorded for them to review. Live is a scheduled video call with the employer's interviewers. Your invitation says which.

  • A prep timer, then an answer timer

Each question shows a prep countdown, then a response countdown, both set by the employer. You can start recording early, and you can click Done Answering before the time runs out.

  • Your tries are on a screen first

Before the first question, a screen shows how many attempts you get, as the employer set it. Once you submit an answer you cannot go back to it, and only the employer can approve a retake.

  • Unlimited practice on generic questions

Three generic practice questions, as many times as you like. You can watch them back, nobody else ever sees them, and they are not your real questions.

  • Same questions for everyone

Everyone applying for the same position gets the same questions, picked by the employer, and the same time to prepare. You cannot see them in advance or watch your real answers afterward.

  • People at the employer decide

The hiring company reviews your answers and decides the next step. Some add a HireVue Assessment that scores job skills like communication and problem solving. HireVue says it never uses your video to identify you.

  • Computer, phone or tablet

Chrome on a computer, or the HireVue for Candidates app on a phone or tablet. HireVue recommends at least 350 kbps for on-demand. If you drop out, the same link brings you back.

What you see, screen by screen

From HireVue's walkthrough for computers, read on October 15, 2026. The phone app follows the same order.

Walk through an on-demand HireVue
  1. The email

    Open the link

Click Practice or Interview in your invitation. Chrome works best. The email gives a due date or a suggested window, and the link expires after the due date.

  2. Intro

The company, the role and the format

You see the number and types of questions and an estimated time. Accept the terms, and you may see an intro video from the company.

  3. Setup

    Camera and microphone check

Allow access, then make sure you can see yourself and the mic meter moves while you talk.

  4. Attempts

    How many tries you get

A screen shows your attempts per question, as the employer set it. Note the number before you go on.

  5. Practice

    Generic practice questions

A blue ribbon marks practice mode. Watch each answer back to check sound, light and background, as many times as you need.

  6. Each question

    Prep time, then recording

The question shows with a prep countdown and a Not Recording note. Click Start Recording or wait, and a three-second countdown starts the recording.

  7. Each answer

    The response countdown

Click Done Answering when you finish. If you don't, the answer submits when the time runs out.

  8. The end

    The employer reviews

Your answers upload and the company decides the next step. HireVue cannot tell you your status.

HireVue publishes no standard times, because each employer sets its own. If you need more time because of a disability, the first screen has a link to request accommodations.

30 HireVue interview questions

HireVue names the common types: past behavior, situational judgment and scenario simulations. Employers pick their own and add why-this-job questions. Our wording, with what a strong answer does.

Motivation5 questions

Why this job, why this employer, why you.

  1. Tell me about yourself.

Show what a strong answer does

Three beats in about 90 seconds: where you are now, the one or two choices that led here, and why this role is the next step. Example answer

  2. Why do you want to work here?

Show what a strong answer does

Two reasons that only fit this employer, each tied to something you have done. A line from their website is not a reason. Example answer

  3. Why this role?

Show what a strong answer does

Show you know what the work is day to day, then name the part you have already enjoyed doing. Example answer

  4. Why should we hire you?

Show what a strong answer does

Pick the two strengths the job description asks for and prove each with one result. End on what you would do in your first months. Example answer

  5. Where do you see yourself in five years?

Show what a strong answer does

Ambitious and close to this path. Name the skills you want to build here, not a job title somewhere else. Example answer

Past behavior10 questions

Bank of America says its video questions are mostly behavioral. One real story each, told in order.

  1. Tell me about a time you worked in a team to reach a goal.

Show what a strong answer does

Make your own part clear. Say what you did that the team would not have done without you, and the result in a number. Example answer

  2. Tell me about a conflict with a teammate.

Show what a strong answer does

A real disagreement about the work, not about a person. Show how you heard their side, what you agreed and how it ended. Example answer

  3. Tell me about a time you failed.

Show what a strong answer does

A real miss that was yours. Spend most of the time on what you changed afterward and the proof that it worked. Example answer

  4. Tell me about a time you received difficult feedback.

Show what a strong answer does

Say what the feedback was in plain words, what you did with it the next week, and who noticed the difference. Example answer

  5. Tell me about a time you had too much to do and not enough time.

Show what a strong answer does

Show how you ranked the work, who you told early and what you let slip on purpose. Example answer

  6. Tell me about a decision you made without all the information.

Show what a strong answer does

What you knew, what you did not, the call you made and how you limited the risk of being wrong. Example answer

  7. Tell me about a time you persuaded someone.

Show what a strong answer does

Start with why they disagreed. Show what you learned about their view and the evidence that changed their mind. Example answer

  8. Tell me about a time you learned something new quickly.

Show what a strong answer does

Name the deadline, how you learned (who you asked, what you skipped) and what you delivered with the new skill. Example answer

  9. Tell me about a time you went above and beyond.

Show what a strong answer does

One extra thing nobody asked for, why you saw the need, and what it changed for the person it helped. Example answer

  10. What is your greatest weakness?

Show what a strong answer does

A real weakness that matters a little in this job, the habit you use to manage it and a recent example of it working. Example answer

What would you do5 questions

HireVue calls these situational judgment questions. In a scenario simulation you act the answer out, speaking to the person as if they were there.

  1. A teammate is not doing their share two days before a deadline. What do you do?

Show what a strong answer does

Talk to them first and ask what is in the way. Then protect the deadline, and only then raise it with the lead.

  2. You find a mistake in work that has already gone to a client. What do you do?

Show what a strong answer does

Check how big it is, tell your manager the same day with a fix ready, and say how you would stop it happening again.

  3. Two senior people each ask for something urgent and you can only do one today. What do you do?

Show what a strong answer does

Ask both about timing, agree an order out loud, and give the one who waits a time they can count on.

  4. A customer is upset about something that was not your fault. What do you do?

Show what a strong answer does

Listen to the end, own the fix even if not the cause, and follow up once it is solved. If it is a simulation, talk to the customer directly.

  5. You are asked to do something you have never done, with little guidance. What do you do?

Show what a strong answer does

Restate the goal, find one example or person to learn from, and show a first draft early.

Banking and markets5 questions

For bank and asset manager roles. Short and clear beats clever.

  1. Tell me about a deal or market story you have followed.

Show what a strong answer does

One story you can explain in a minute: what happened, why it happened and what it means for the people involved.

  2. Pitch me a stock.

Show what a strong answer does

The company, your view in one line, two reasons with a number each, the main risk and what would change your mind. Example answer

  3. How do the three financial statements link together?

Show what a strong answer does

Net income flows to cash flow and retained earnings, cash flows to the balance sheet. Walk one change through all three. Example answer

  4. How would you value a company?

Show what a strong answer does

Name the three methods, when each fits, and that you would compare their ranges rather than pick one. Example answer

  5. What does an analyst actually do all day?

Show what a strong answer does

Models, pitch books and client requests, with the hours that come with them. Then why that work suits you. Example answer

Consulting and the Big Four5 questions

For Deloitte, ZS and other firms that screen with recorded video. Give each answer a clear structure, like a case.

  1. Why do you want to go into consulting?

Show what a strong answer does

Tie the problems you want to work on to something you have already done, then say why this firm's work fits. Example answer

  2. Tell me about a difficult problem you solved.

Show what a strong answer does

Say how you broke the problem down, the one insight that cracked it and what changed because of your answer. Example answer

  3. Tell me about a time you had to work without clear direction.

Show what a strong answer does

Show how you set your own goal, checked it with someone early and adjusted when you learned more. Example answer

  4. Tell me about a time you took the initiative without being asked.

Show what a strong answer does

The gap you noticed, why nobody else had acted, what you did first and the result it led to. Example answer

  5. What are your greatest strengths?

Show what a strong answer does

Two strengths the job asks for, each with a short story as proof. Skip adjectives you cannot back up. Example answer

Mistakes and a prep plan

HireVue mistakes to avoid
  • Reading a script

Morgan Stanley's recruiters call it the most common bad habit: it sounds rehearsed and your moving eyes distract the viewer. Bank of America says notes are okay if you don't read from them.

  • Stopping at 40 seconds

Bank of America expects at least 1:45 of its three minutes. You don't need all the time, but a thin answer leaves out the how and why nobody can ask about.

  • Watching yourself instead of the camera

HireVue suggests moving your video window near the top center of the screen, so looking at it also looks like eye contact.

  • Skipping the practice questions

They are the only place to check your sound, light and background, since you cannot watch your real answers back.

  • Counting on a retake

A submitted answer is final unless the employer approves a new attempt. If you drop out mid-answer, that answer has most likely been submitted.

  • Leaving it to the deadline

The link expires after the due date, and only the employer can extend it.

How to prepare for a HireVue

A week is plenty if you practice out loud.

  1. A week before

Read the job and the firm's own page

HireVue's advice is to study the job description. Check the employer's row below for its timing and tips.

  2. A week before

    Write six short stories

HireVue suggests a list of brief stories about challenges, what you did and the results. Six covers most behavioral questions.

  3. Three days before

Answer on the clock, out loud

Use a think timer and an answer timer, then watch it back. Aim for about two minutes per answer.

  4. The day before

    Check your setup

Chrome or the app, a charged device, light in front of you, a quiet room and the camera at eye level.

  5. On the day

    Practice, then start

Do two practice questions, note your attempts, and begin when you feel sharp. Set aside 45 minutes.

Answer them out loud, on the clock

The free HireVue practice gives you a question, 30 seconds to think and up to three minutes on your own camera, Bank of America's timing, then plays your answer back. No sign-up, and nothing is uploaded.

Questions people ask

How long is a HireVue interview?

HireVue says most video assessments have five to eight questions and take under 20 to 30 minutes, and suggests setting aside 45. Goldman Sachs says about 30 minutes, Bank of America 20 to 30, and BlackRock under 15.

How much time do you get per question?

The employer decides, so there is no standard. Bank of America gives 30 seconds to prepare and up to three minutes to answer, Deutsche Bank two minutes and two minutes, and BlackRock up to three minutes. Your practice questions run on your employer's timing.

Is a HireVue interview scored by AI?

Sometimes. Every HireVue is reviewed by the employer, and some also add a HireVue Assessment that scores job skills like communication and problem solving. HireVue says not every interview has one, and people make the hiring decision.

Can you redo a HireVue answer?

Only if the employer allows more than one attempt, which you see before you start. Once you submit an answer you cannot go back. BlackRock and Deutsche Bank say one attempt, so practice as if you have one.

Can you use notes in a HireVue?

Bank of America says notes are okay as long as you don't read a script. Morgan Stanley suggests reminders on a sticky note at the edge of your screen. HireVue itself says you can keep notes next to you.

How long should a HireVue answer be?

Use most of the time without filling all of it. Bank of America expects at least 1:45 of its three minutes, and Morgan Stanley says short, concise answers are best. About two minutes is a good target.

Can you see the questions before a HireVue?

No. Everyone for the same position gets the same questions, picked by the employer, and they stay hidden until you start. The three practice questions are generic, and you cannot watch your real answers afterward.

What if my connection drops during a HireVue?

Open the same link again. If you dropped between questions, you pick up at the next one. If you dropped mid-answer, that answer has most likely been submitted, so finish and tell the employer, which can send a retake.

Can you do a HireVue on your phone?

Yes. HireVue supports iPhone and iPad on iOS 15 or newer and Android 8 or newer with a front camera, and recommends its HireVue for Candidates app. On a computer it recommends Chrome.

Can you get extra time?

Yes, if you need an accommodation. The first page of the interview has a link to request accommodations, which gives more time on timed questions. For anything else, ask the employer.

What happens after the HireVue?

The employer reviews your answers and decides the next step, and HireVue cannot tell you your status. At Goldman Sachs the next step is a superday of typically two to five interviews.

Is Soreno affiliated with HireVue or any employer?

No. Soreno is an independent practice tool, not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by HireVue or any firm named on this page. The questions and notes are Soreno's own.
