Why BlackRock? how to answer it

BlackRock's students and graduates pages say its interviews focus on the BlackRock Principles, your experience and your capabilities. A strong why BlackRock answer names the business area and function you applied to, ties it to one thing BlackRock says about itself, such as its role as a fiduciary or Aladdin, and proves one Principle with something you did. Expect it in the HireVue pre-interview assessment or in live rounds. Before you record, Soreno, an AI voice interview practice app for consulting and finance candidates, has free HireVue-style video practice on a timer, with no sign-up needed.

The five BlackRock Principles5 Principles

BlackRock calls these its core values and its cultural language, and its careers page says it hires people who believe in them. The meaning is BlackRock's, shortened. The story to bring is our suggestion. Prove one, don't recite five.

  1. 1

We are a fiduciary to our clients

Clients' interests come first, and BlackRock calls the fiduciary mindset the bedrock of its identity. Bring a time you put someone else's long-term goal or downside ahead of a quick win.

  2. 2

    We are One BlackRock

Working together without silos and without turf, and Aladdin as the common language that unifies the firm. Bring a project where you joined two disciplines, say data and finance, and shared the credit.

  3. 3

    We are passionate about performance

Relentless about better ways to serve clients, and lifelong students of markets, technology and the world. Bring a process or model you made faster or more accurate.

  4. 4

    We take emotional ownership

A deep sense of responsibility to clients and colleagues, from investment performance to the technology BlackRock builds. Bring a mistake you caught or a problem you stayed with past your part.

  5. 5

We are committed to a better future

Long-term thinking for clients, employees, shareholders and communities. Bring something you built to last, or work on long-term saving.

An asset manager, not a bankThe point most answers miss

BlackRock's students page explains that asset managers act as agents managing other people's money. An answer that sounds like investment banking misses this.

  1. The job

Other people's money, for their goals

In BlackRock's description, asset managers do due diligence, assess clients' risk appetite and work toward the financial goals the client sets.

  2. Technology

    It uses what it sells

BlackRock began selling Aladdin in 1999 and says the technology is embedded in everything it does. Its Aladdin page for asset managers calls this a user-provider model.

  3. Whole portfolio

    Public and private markets

BlackRock's history page lists Barclays Global Investors bringing iShares ETFs and systematic investing, eFront bringing private markets to Aladdin, and more recently Global Infrastructure Partners, Preqin's private markets data and HPS Investment Partners' private debt.

Match the answer to your business area6 business areas

BlackRock's Americas students page sorts its programs into six business areas. Use its description of yours.

  1. Investments

    Persistent, long-term performance

Investment teams backed by a world-class technology firm, a team approach and integrated research and risk management. Functions include Portfolio Management, Investment Research and Private Markets Investing.

  2. Analytics & Risk

    Independent oversight

Oversight of investment and enterprise risks, risk-aware portfolios and Aladdin-powered solutions, through Investment Risk & Quantitative Analysis.

  3. Technology

Big Data and new digital products

Analytics & Modeling, Software Engineering and Technology Operations. Software Engineering and Analytics & Modeling applicants also take a coding challenge.

  4. Client & Product

    Products and services for clients

Their development, distribution and management, across institutional and wealth clients and the fintech platform.

  5. Operations

Service as a source of alpha

BlackRock's stated vision: make it easier for clients to do business with it, with service so simple it becomes a source of alpha.

  6. Corporate & Strategic

    Strategy, operations and risk

Functions from Accounting and Compliance to Corporate Strategy and Finance and Public Policy.

Two sample answers and a weak one (ours)Risk, Technology

Soreno wrote these for invented candidates. Every detail about the candidates is made up. Use the shape, not the words.

  1. Analytics & Risk

A senior applying to the Full-Time Analyst Program

"I want to start in Investment Risk & Quantitative Analysis, and BlackRock is where risk sits inside the investment process instead of after it. In our student-managed fund, part of BlackRock for Universities, I ran Aladdin scenarios on our bond sleeve and found our duration was almost twice what our policy allowed. Taking that to the portfolio managers, and having them change the trade, is the moment I decided on risk. Your Principles say Aladdin unifies the firm with a common language, and I saw a small version of that: the risk view and the portfolio view were the same screen. I also like that Analytics & Risk is described as independent oversight that still builds Aladdin-powered solutions. That mix of judgment and building is the job I want, and it's why I applied here first." About 136 words, roughly 54 seconds at 150 words a minute.

  2. Why it works

One function, one Principle, one proof

It names the function, uses BlackRock's own description of Analytics & Risk and of Aladdin, and proves One BlackRock with a real moment instead of claiming it.

  3. Technology

Why BlackRock over a consumer tech company

"I want to be a software engineer whose users sit down the hall. Aladdin is used by BlackRock's own investors and sold to other institutions, the user-provider model your Aladdin page describes, so the people I build for give feedback every day. My capstone was a natural language search over company filings, which is why Aladdin Copilot caught my eye: a plain-language way to ask questions across Aladdin. A consumer app can measure success in clicks. Here the code supports how other people's money is managed, and your Principles talk about emotional ownership of clients' futures, including in the technology. I'd rather carry that responsibility than chase engagement. That's why BlackRock Technology, and why Software Engineering." About 116 words, roughly 46 seconds at 150 words a minute.

  4. Why it works

It answers the comparison without a knock

It uses the user-provider model and a Principle to explain the choice, ties a real project to one Aladdin feature, and never says the other path is bad.

  5. The weak version

    Why it doesn't land

"BlackRock is the biggest asset manager in the world, with over $13 trillion in assets. I've always been passionate about finance, and working on big deals at the top firm will give me the best training and exit opportunities. I really admire the five Principles, especially passionate about performance and One BlackRock, and I'm a hard worker with strong modeling skills." Size fits one sentence at most, "deals" and "exit opportunities" sound like a bank, and the Principles are named with no proof.

What the interviewer listens for in why BlackRock

BlackRock publishes no rubric for this question. This is our reading of what its students pages and its AI interview guidance ask of candidates.

  • A Principle, proved

BlackRock says its interviews focus on the BlackRock Principles, your experience or your capabilities.

    What interviewers listen for
One Principle in your own words, with a moment where you acted that way.
  • The function you chose

Interviews are with representatives of the functions you picked, and you can choose at most three.

    What interviewers listen for
Why this function, in the words BlackRock uses to describe its business area.
  • You know what an asset manager does

BlackRock explains asset management to students as managing other people's money toward their goals.

    What interviewers listen for
Clients and their goals, not deals and fees.
  • Your own words

Its AI guidance asks you to share what motivates you and how you approach challenges, and says answers must reflect your own words and experiences.

    What interviewers listen for
A natural answer, not a read script. Pausing to think is encouraged.

Four parts of a why BlackRock answer

Our structure, about 90 seconds out loud, or roughly 225 words at 150 a minute. That fits the 90-second limit in EMEA and APAC and leaves room inside the Americas' 3 minutes.

  1. Part 1

    The function and the work

One sentence on the function you applied to and the work in it you want. This is the bridge from why asset management.

  2. Part 2

One BlackRock fact for that function

Aladdin's user-provider model for Technology, independent oversight for Analytics & Risk, service as a source of alpha for Operations, whole-portfolio reach for Investments.

From BlackRock: students and graduates, Americas.

  3. Part 3

    Prove one Principle

A short story from a class, a job, a student fund or a hackathon where you already worked the way that Principle describes.

    From BlackRock: principles.

  4. Part 4

    A touchpoint, then stop

Something you did to learn about BlackRock, such as a Future of Asset Management session or BlackRock for Universities, then close on the program by name.

Our structure. BlackRock publishes no format for this answer.

12 follow-ups to why BlackRock

Our own questions for after the first answer, grouped by what the interviewer is checking, with what we'd count as strong.

Is the reason about BlackRock?

The interviewer checks how specific your reason is.

  1. Why asset management and not investment banking?

Use BlackRock's own description: managing other people's money toward their goals over time, against advising on one transaction.

    • “What would you miss about banking?”
    • “Where else are you applying?”
  2. Why BlackRock and not another large asset manager?

Something specific: Aladdin and the user-provider model, the public and private markets it now covers, or your function's description. Never a knock on a rival. Practice it, see a model answer

  3. Why these functions?

You can choose up to three, so show one thread through them, such as risk thinking or client work, instead of three unrelated guesses.

  4. Which Principle matters most to you?

One, in your own words, with a short story. Fiduciary or emotional ownership work well when the story has real stakes.

  5. What do you know about Aladdin?

A central processing system that connects portfolio management, trading, compliance, operations and risk, sold since 1999. Not a stock-picking robot.

  6. How do you keep up with the markets?

Two sources you actually read and one recent move you can explain simply. Practice it, see a model answer

Your story and fit

Tests whether the reason fits who you are.

  1. Walk me through your resume.

In order, each move with a reason, ending on why this function at BlackRock now. Practice it, see a model answer

  2. Pitch me a stock.

For Investments roles. One idea, one reason the market misses it and one risk. Practice it, see a model answer

  3. Where do you see yourself in five years?

Growth inside the work, said honestly, and consistent with the function you picked. Practice it, see a model answer

Stories for the Principles

One story each, under two minutes.

  1. Tell me about a time you did the right thing when it was hard.

Fiduciary to clients. The pressure, what you chose and what it cost you. Practice it, see a model answer

  2. Tell me about a time you disagreed with a teammate.

One BlackRock. How you made your case and committed once the team decided. Practice it, see a model answer

  3. What questions do you have for me?

One about the interviewer's own team or how they use Aladdin, never one the website answers. Practice it, see a model answer

Mistakes in why BlackRock answers

Where these answers usually slip, in our experience.

  • The size answer

"The biggest asset manager" is one fact, not a reason. If scale matters to you, say what it lets you do in your function.

  • Talking like a banker

"Deals" and "exit opportunities" signal you think BlackRock is an investment bank. Talk about clients, portfolios and risk.

  • Reciting the Principles

Naming all five proves you read a page. Proving one with a story proves you live it.

  • Getting Aladdin wrong

BlackRock describes it as a central processing system for investment management. Calling it an AI that picks stocks shows you didn't read.

  • Reading a script on camera

BlackRock's AI guidance says using AI or reading scripts during HireVue or live interviews is not permitted and may affect your candidacy.

  • One answer for three functions

If you applied to Investments and Technology, the reasons can share a thread but can't be the same words.

Before the interview

Our plan, built on what BlackRock's own pages offer students.

  1. First

Read your business area and the Principles

Write one sentence on your function in BlackRock's words and pick the one Principle your best story proves.

From BlackRock: students and graduates, Americas and BlackRock: principles.

  2. Learn

    Use BlackRock's own events

The Future of Asset Management Virtual Series runs live sessions with BlackRock professionals on technology, data, risk and market structure. BlackRock for Universities brings Aladdin to student-managed funds at over 20 colleges in the US and Canada.

From BlackRock: students and graduates, Americas.

  3. AI

Prepare with AI, answer without it

BlackRock allows AI for brainstorming questions, practicing STAR and researching the firm, and bans it during any part of the interview, video included.

    From BlackRock: AI interview guidance.

  4. Video

    Rehearse on a clock

Say the answer out loud until it fits in 90 seconds. In the Americas you get up to 3 minutes per question, in EMEA and APAC 3 minutes to prepare and up to 90 seconds to answer, all in one sitting within five days of applying.

    HireVue interview guide

From BlackRock: candidate FAQs, Americas, BlackRock: candidate FAQs, EMEA and BlackRock: candidate FAQs, APAC.

  5. Rounds

Know the rest of the process

Interviews may include a group exercise, presentation or case study. Our BlackRock interview guide covers each stage and the questions to expect.

Questions people ask

How do I answer why BlackRock?

Name the function you applied to and the work you want in it, give one thing BlackRock says about that business or about Aladdin, prove one BlackRock Principle with something you did, and close on the program. About 90 seconds.

What are the five BlackRock Principles?

We are a fiduciary to our clients, We are One BlackRock, We are passionate about performance, We take emotional ownership, and We are committed to a better future. BlackRock says its student interviews focus on them, your experience and your capabilities.

How long do I have to answer on the BlackRock HireVue?

In the Americas, up to 3 minutes per question, with the whole assessment under 15 minutes. In EMEA and APAC, 3 minutes to prepare and up to 90 seconds to answer, under 10 minutes in all. Every region asks you to finish in one sitting within five days of applying.

Should I mention Aladdin?

If it fits your function, yes. BlackRock calls it a central processing system for investment management, has sold it since 1999 and says Aladdin unifies the firm. Say what it means for your work, not just its name.

Can I use ChatGPT to prepare my answer?

BlackRock's AI guidance allows AI before the interview, for brainstorming questions, practicing STAR and researching the firm. Using AI or reading scripts during any part of the interview, including the video, is not permitted.

How many functions can I apply to?

One region and one program, with up to two applications and no more than three functions overall, according to BlackRock's candidate FAQs. Its Americas FAQ adds that a withdrawn application still counts toward your annual limit.

How long should my answer be?

About 90 seconds, in our experience. Our Analytics & Risk sample above is 136 words, about 54 seconds spoken. Then stop and let the interviewer follow up.

Keep going
