BlackRock interview questions, and its video round

BlackRock's student process starts with a pre-interview assessment: a short recorded video with up to three minutes per question, under 15 minutes in one sitting and due within five days of applying. Interviews with the functions you chose then focus on the BlackRock Principles, your experience or your capabilities, and may include a group exercise, presentation or case study. Try the timing first with our free HireVue practice tool. Pick BlackRock for three minutes per answer on your own camera, with no sign-up.

Working together without silos or turf, with a diverse and connected culture.

    What a strong story shows
A time you pulled in people from another team or background to get a better result.
  • We are passionate about performance

Relentless about better ways to serve clients, and lifelong students of markets, technology and the world.

    Show what they listen for
    What a strong story shows
Something you taught yourself because the work needed it, and how you keep learning about markets.
  • We take emotional ownership

A deep sense of responsibility to clients and each other, and the highest standards of excellence.

    Show what they listen for
    What a strong story shows
A time you owned a mistake or a result that wasn't strictly yours to own.
  • We are committed to a better future

Long-term thinkers focused on helping people build a better tomorrow.

    Show what they listen for
    What a strong story shows
Why helping more people experience financial well-being matters to you, in your own words.

How BlackRock hires students in the Americas

From BlackRock's Americas students page and candidate FAQ. Other regions have their own pages.

The steps BlackRock describes
  1. Apply

One program, up to two functions

The 2027 Summer Internship and Full-Time Analyst postings say one program and up to two functions, both in the same application, and no new application this year if you withdraw. The candidate FAQ describes a second application for up to three functions, so check your own posting. You can apply in one region only.

  2. Right after

    Pre-interview assessment

An email link to record short video answers to questions based on your program. Up to three minutes per question, under 15 minutes, one sitting, within five days. It can't be retaken once submitted. One assessment covers all your functions.

    BlackRock: candidate FAQ, Americas

  3. Tech roles

    Coding test

Software Engineering and Analytics & Modeling applicants take a coding challenge, about 60 minutes within five calendar days, followed by one video question.

  4. Interviews

    With the functions you chose

Conversations focused on the BlackRock Principles, your experience or your capabilities. They may include a group exercise, a presentation or a case study. Software engineers may get problem-solving or technical questions.

  5. Results

    Status in the portal

BlackRock emails you when your status changes. It does not give individual feedback on unsuccessful applications, and you can reapply the next year if you are still eligible.

BlackRock does not publish its video questions, how many there are, the number of interview rounds or how it scores.

15 BlackRock interview questions

Our own wording, built from what BlackRock's pages stress. BlackRock does not publish its questions. Each note says what a strong answer does.

Pre-interview video5 questions

Up to three minutes each. Aim for about 90 seconds and stop when the answer is done.

  1. Why BlackRock?

    What a strong answer does

Something specific from its pages or someone you met, tied to your own reason. Size alone is not a reason. Practice it, see a model answer

  2. Why this function?

    What a strong answer does

What the analyst in that function actually does, from its page, and the experience that makes you want it.

  3. Tell me about yourself.

    What a strong answer does

Three beats: where you are, what you have done that fits, why this program now. Practice it, see a model answer

  4. Tell me about a time you put someone else's interests ahead of your own.

    What a strong answer does

The fiduciary principle in a student's life. What it cost you, and why you'd do it again.

  5. Tell me about a time you worked across a group to get something done.

    What a strong answer does

One BlackRock. Name the groups, the friction and what you did to connect them. Practice it, see a model answer

Markets4 questions

Portfolio Management asks for a passion for investing and an interest in markets. Have a current view.

  1. How do you keep up with the markets?

    What a strong answer does

Your actual sources and routine, then one thing you learned this week and what it means for an investor. Practice it, see a model answer

  2. What market trend are you watching, and how would it affect a portfolio?

    What a strong answer does

One trend, the mechanism, the assets it helps or hurts and what would prove you wrong.

    • “How would you position a bond portfolio for it?”
    • “What is the market already pricing in?”
  3. What happens to bond prices when interest rates rise?

    What a strong answer does

Prices fall, and longer duration falls more. Give a rough number for a five-year bond. Practice it, see a model answer

  4. Pitch me a stock.

    What a strong answer does

The company, your thesis in a sentence, two reasons with numbers, the valuation and the main risk. Practice it, see a model answer

Experience and capabilities6 questions

Interviews focus on your experience or capabilities as well as the Principles.

  1. Tell me about a time you challenged someone's idea.

    What a strong answer does

Investment Research asks for people who constructively debate and challenge ideas. Show respect and evidence, and what changed. Practice it, see a model answer

  2. Tell me about a time you used data or technology to solve a problem.

    What a strong answer does

The function pages we read all ask analysts to use data, technology and AI responsibly. One tool, what you built, the result.

  3. Tell me about a mistake you owned.

    What a strong answer does

Emotional ownership. What happened, what you did first, what you changed after. Practice it, see a model answer

  4. Explain something complex to me in two minutes.

    What a strong answer does

Pick a concept from your studies or a market topic, start with why it matters and use one example.

  5. Tell me about a time you learned something quickly.

    What a strong answer does

Lifelong students of markets and technology. How you learned, how fast and what you did with it. Practice it, see a model answer

  6. What questions do you have for us?

    What a strong answer does

One about the team's work, one about how analysts grow. Nothing the careers pages already answer. Practice it, see a model answer

More to prepare with

Mistakes that cost BlackRock applicants
  • Leaving the video for day five

Miss the deadline and the application is withdrawn, and you can't reapply for the same opportunity.

  • Reading an AI-written answer

BlackRock does not permit AI tools during any live or recorded interview, including reading or paraphrasing AI responses in real time, unless your recruiter says otherwise.

  • Picking functions at random

The 2027 postings allow two functions in one application, and a withdrawn application can't be replaced. Read each function's page first.

  • Using all three minutes

Up to three minutes is a limit, not a target. A tight 90 seconds usually lands better than a long one.

How to prepare for BlackRock
  1. Before you apply

    Choose your functions

Read each function page and note what its analysts do and the skills it lists. Apply early, since BlackRock reviews on a rolling basis.

  2. Before you apply

    Prepare five stories

One for each Principle, each with a clear result. Most behavioral questions can be answered with one of them.

  3. Before the video

    Rehearse on a timer

Record yourself answering why BlackRock and why this function with a three-minute cap. Watch it back once.

  4. Before interviews

    Bring a market view

A current trend, a stock or a bond view you can defend for five minutes with follow-ups.
