BlackRock internships 2027: programs, dates and pay

BlackRock's 2027 Summer Internship runs nine weeks from June to August in the Americas and eight weeks in EMEA and Asia Pacific. You apply to one region and one program, record a short video assessment within five days of applying, then interview with the functions you chose on the BlackRock Principles. The 2027 Americas posting lists hourly pay from $34.62 to $60.10, and in Asia Pacific, Seoul is open until November 29, 2026 and Tokyo recruits on a rolling basis. To rehearse the video round and the interviews, Soreno, an AI voice interview practice app for consulting and finance candidates, offers free video answer practice with no sign-up plus full mock interviews that follow up and score each answer.

What does BlackRock look for in interns?

BlackRock says its interviews focus on the BlackRock Principles, your experience or your capabilities. The five Principles, in BlackRock's words where quoted:

  • We are a fiduciary to our clients

"Our clients' interests come first." BlackRock ties the fiduciary mindset to integrity and the unbiased advice it gives.

  • We are One BlackRock

Working "without silos and without turf" for the best outcomes for clients, the firm and communities. BlackRock adds that its Aladdin platform unifies its people.

  • We are passionate about performance

Relentless about finding better ways to serve clients and improve the firm, and lifelong students of markets, technology and the world.

  • We take emotional ownership

A deep sense of responsibility to clients and to each other, and the highest standards of excellence.

  • We are committed to a better future

Long-term thinkers who run the business sustainably and responsibly for clients, employees, shareholders and communities.

How does the BlackRock internship process work?

BlackRock's "How we hire" steps, with the rules from its candidate FAQs and postings.

See each step
  1. Step 1

Apply to one region and one program

Enter your details and upload a resume. Each application covers up to two functions, and a second application to the same program can add a third, so two applications and three functions at most. You may apply in only one region.

From BlackRock: Candidate FAQs for the Americas and BlackRock: 2027 Summer Internship Program, AMERS.

  2. Step 2

Record the video within five days

The link arrives by email right after you apply, or open it from the portal with Start Assessment. In the Americas you get up to three minutes per answer and the whole thing takes under 15 minutes. In EMEA and Asia Pacific you get three minutes to prepare and up to 90 seconds to answer, under 10 minutes in all. It's one sitting, no retakes, and a missed deadline withdraws the application. The Asia Pacific posting says Shanghai applicants won't be invited to one.

From BlackRock: Candidate FAQs for the Americas, BlackRock: Candidate FAQs for Asia Pacific and BlackRock: 2027 Summer Internship Program, APAC.

  3. Step 2, by region

How many videos, and in which language

In the Americas, two functions still mean one video. In EMEA and Asia Pacific you record one per function. Asia Pacific videos are in English, and Japan roles need English and Japanese.

From BlackRock: Candidate FAQs for the Americas, BlackRock: Candidate FAQs for EMEA and BlackRock: Candidate FAQs for Asia Pacific.

  4. Coding roles

Coding test for Software Engineering and Analytics & Modeling

A set of coding questions, then one video question. You get five calendar days for the coding part, which typically takes about 60 minutes. Each of the two functions uses a different test.

From BlackRock: Candidate FAQs for the Americas.

  5. Step 3

    Interviews with your functions

Conversations with people from the functions you chose, on the BlackRock Principles, your experience or your capabilities. They may include a group exercise, presentation or case study, and software engineers may get technical questions. BlackRock encourages you to pause and think.

    How final round interviews run

From BlackRock: Students & Graduates in the Americas and BlackRock: AI guidance for interviews.

  6. After

The summer, then the Analyst Program

Interns who enjoy the summer can apply to the two-year Full-Time Analyst Program, which starts in early August. BlackRock doesn't give individual feedback, and encourages reapplying next year if you still qualify.

11 BlackRock internship questions to practice

Our questions, built on the five Principles and the functions you can choose. Sample answers are written by our team, and the applicants are invented.

Fit and the functions you chose3 questions

Interviewers come from the functions on your application, so name them.

  1. Why BlackRock, and why the two functions on your application?

    Show the sample answer

Sample answer. I chose Investment Research and Investment Product Strategy & Solutions because I like seeing a market view become something a client can own. Our student fund spent weeks picking stocks while rate risk drove most of our swings, which taught me to look at the whole portfolio. BlackRock puts clients' interests first, and I want to learn where research and products sit side by side.

One reason for each function tied to its work, then one for BlackRock. Generic praise of the firm's size doesn't answer it. Practice it, see a model answer

  2. How would you explain what an asset manager does to someone outside finance?

    What a strong answer does

Plain words: clients hand over money with goals and limits, and the manager invests it and watches the risk for them.

  3. What's a market trend you follow, and what does it mean for BlackRock's clients?

    What a strong answer does

One trend, why it matters to one kind of client, such as a pension or a saver, and what you would watch next. Practice it, see a model answer

Stories mapped to the five Principles7 questions

Ours. Each question tests one Principle. Use the STAR structure BlackRock suggests and end on a result.

  1. Tell me about a time you put someone's interests ahead of an easy win.

    Show the sample answer

Sample answer. Our campus consulting group agreed to write a social media plan for a bakery. Halfway through 40 customer interviews, we saw the real problem: they sold out of morning pastries by 9 a.m., so ads would send people to empty shelves. I showed the owner the data and we switched our final deliverable to an oven batch schedule at no extra fee. Morning sales rose 22% the next month.

We are a fiduciary to our clients. Show what the easy path was, why it wasn't right for them and what it cost you to change course.

  2. Tell me about a time you worked across groups that weren't talking.

    Show the sample answer

Sample answer. In our robotics club the mechanical and software teams worked in separate rooms and blamed each other when the arm missed targets. Two weeks before qualifiers, accuracy was 60%. I set up a daily 20-minute review where both teams read the same sensor logs. On day two we found a loose camera mount. A ten-minute bracket fix replaced a week of code rewrites, and we hit 94% at the competition.

We are One BlackRock. Name the silo, what you did to join the groups and the result for everyone. Practice it, see a model answer

  3. Describe a process you made faster or better.

    Show the sample answer

Sample answer. At a logistics internship, three of us spent four hours every Friday matching carrier invoices to dispatch records. I wrote a short Python script that matched shipment numbers and flagged rate gaps over $5. My manager checked it against two weeks of past invoices before we used it. Friday matching dropped to 15 minutes, and it caught $1,800 in overcharges in the first month.

We are passionate about performance. Before and after in numbers, and how you checked the new way worked. Practice it, see a model answer

  4. Tell me about a mistake you owned.

    Show the sample answer

Sample answer. Two days before our econometrics presentation, I found I had merged two county codes wrong while cleaning our data, which skewed our income results. I told my three teammates that hour, reran all 12 regression tables that night and sent a one-page list of every changed number by 8 a.m. We updated the slides in 30 minutes. Now I check summary statistics after every merge.

We take emotional ownership. Say it early, fix it fully and show what you changed so it doesn't happen again. Practice it, see a model answer

  5. Tell me about a decision where you chose the long-term option.

    What a strong answer does

We are committed to a better future. What the short-term choice was, why you passed on it and how it paid off later. Practice it, see a model answer

  6. Tell me about a time you used data to change someone's mind.

    Show the sample answer

Sample answer. Our dining council planned to close the late-night hall to save $4,000 a month, saying few students came. I pulled three months of card swipes, about 18,000 of them, and grouped them by 15 minutes. Nearly all late visits came before 10 p.m., right after evening labs. I proposed closing at 10 instead of 11, which saved $2,000 a month and kept almost every visit.

Show the data you pulled, how you framed it for the other person and the compromise it led to. Analytics & Risk interviewers will ask how you checked it. Practice it, see a model answer

  7. How do you handle competing deadlines from different people?

    What a strong answer does

Ask what each person really needs and by when, then sequence. Show one trade-off you made out loud. Practice it, see a model answer

A portfolio question for Investments and Analytics & Risk1 question

Our worked example. The client and numbers are invented.

  1. A client's $1,000,000 portfolio is 60% stocks and 40% bonds. Stocks fall 10% and bonds rise 2%. What is the return, what are the new weights, and what trade puts it back to 60/40?

    Show the sample answer

Sample answer. Stocks go from $600,000 to $540,000 and bonds from $400,000 to $408,000, so the portfolio is worth $948,000, a loss of 5.2%. The weights drift to 57.0% stocks and 43.0% bonds. To get back to 60/40, the target in stocks is 60% of $948,000, or $568,800, so sell $28,800 of bonds and buy $28,800 of stocks.

Work in dollars first, then weights. Say why rebalancing matters: drift leaves the client with a different risk than they chose.

Rules, prep plan and FAQ

Rules that can end a BlackRock application
  • Withdrawing to fix a typo

A withdrawn application still counts toward your limit, and you can't submit a new one to that program this year. Update your contact details or upload a revised resume in the portal instead.

  • Missing the five days

An application without the video or coding test by the deadline is withdrawn, and you can't reapply for the same opportunity.

  • Using AI during any interview

BlackRock doesn't permit AI tools in live interviews, technical assessments or recorded ones such as HireVue, unless your recruiter says otherwise. Using AI to prepare is fine.

  • Applying in two regions

You may apply to only one region: Americas, EMEA or Asia Pacific.

How to prepare for a BlackRock internship

Our plan, in the order the process runs.

  1. Before you apply

Check your window and your graduation date

Confirm your graduation window and that your function is open, then choose two functions with the third-function rule in mind.

  2. Before you submit

    Have five Principle stories ready

One story per Principle, each with a number in the result. The video link arrives right after you apply, so prepare first.

  3. Days 1 to 5

    Rehearse to the clock

Practice three-minute answers for the Americas or 90-second ones for EMEA and Asia Pacific, then record in one quiet sitting with AI tools closed.

  4. Before interviews

Know your functions and one market story

Read your function's page, prepare one market trend and work a few portfolio and percent questions out loud.
