What is a superday, and how to prepare

A superday is the final round: several interviews back to back, usually on one day. Goldman Sachs and Deutsche Bank use the name. Consulting firms mostly say final round, and Capital One calls it a Power Day.

Updated

  • The last round. Goldman Sachs typically runs two to five interviews for campus hires.
  • Several interviewers. Junior and senior people, one after another, in person or on video.
  • Fit and technicals. Banks mix both. Consulting final rounds are cases plus fit questions.
  • Sometimes a test. Some firms add a case study, an assessment or a modeling exercise.
  • Every room counts. Have your why-this-firm answer and six stories ready before the day.

What happens at a superday

What banks say about their own final rounds:

  • Two to five interviews, sometimes more

Goldman Sachs typically holds two to five final round interviews for campus hires, depending on the division. A Morgan Stanley intern described a Super Day of six 20-minute interviews.

  • People you could work with

Goldman Sachs says you meet a cross-section of people you could work with. At Moelis, final round candidates meet multiple senior bankers onsite.

  • Fit and technical questions

Morgan Stanley says interviews could be competency, strengths based, skills based or technical. Expect both kinds in one day.

  • A case or test at some firms

Deutsche Bank's Assessment Centre/Super Day typically adds competency assessments, case studies and a technical interview.

A sample superday schedule

An example built from what banks publish, for a four-interview day. Your invitation gives the real agenda.

See the day, hour by hour
  1. 8:30

    Check in

Arrive early or log on ten minutes before. Have the agenda, your resume and a notepad in front of you.

  2. 9:00

Interview 1: an analyst or associate

Often the most technical: accounting, valuation and a walk through your resume.

  3. 9:45

    Interview 2: a vice president

Behavioral stories and why this bank, with a technical question or two.

  4. 10:30

    Interview 3: a managing director

Fit and judgment, a deal or market you follow, and your questions for them.

  5. 11:15

Lunch or a chat with the team

Penn's career office says a superday can include lunch or time to network with associates. Stay as sharp as you are in the interviews.

  6. 12:30

Interview 4: a case or test, if the role has one

A case study, a modeling test or a written exercise at some firms. Consulting final rounds run two or three cases instead.

  7. 1:30

    Wrap up

Thank the coordinator. Write down each interviewer's name and one detail from the conversation for your thank-you notes.

The times are our example. Banks do not publish interview lengths, apart from one Morgan Stanley story of six 20-minute interviews.

16 common superday questions

The questions that come up across a final round day. Each links to a worked answer, weak to strong.

Fit and motivation5 questions

Every interviewer can ask these, so the answers must hold up five times.

  1. Walk me through your background and why you are here today.

Show what a strong answer does

Two minutes, in order, each step explaining the next. End on why this role, not on your last job. Example answer

  2. Why do you want to go into investment banking?

Show what a strong answer does

Name what you want to learn and the work itself, with one moment that made it real for you. Example answer

  3. Why do you want to work at this bank?

Show what a strong answer does

Two specific reasons: a group, a deal or a person you spoke with. A reason any bank could claim is a weak one. Example answer

  4. Why do you want to go into consulting?

Show what a strong answer does

For consulting final rounds. Tie the problems you want to solve to something you have already done. Example answer

  5. Do you have any questions for me?

Show what a strong answer does

Ask senior people about their own work and judgment, not facts on the website. Have two for each interviewer. Example answer

Behavioral stories4 questions

One true story each, about two minutes, with your own part clear.

  1. Tell me about a time you led a group to a result that mattered.

Show what a strong answer does

Show the decision you made as the leader and the result in a number or a clear outcome. Example answer

  2. Tell me about a conflict you had with a teammate.

Show what a strong answer does

Show you understood their side, what you did to fix it and how the work came out. Example answer

  3. Tell me about a time you failed.

Show what a strong answer does

A real failure you caused, what you changed afterwards and proof the change stuck. Example answer

  4. Tell me about a time you received tough feedback.

Show what a strong answer does

Say what the feedback was, why it was fair and what you now do differently. Example answer

Banking technicals5 questions

Short, correct answers. Late in the day matters as much as the first room.

  1. Walk me through a DCF.

Show what a strong answer does

Free cash flow, the discount rate, terminal value, then back to equity value per share, in under two minutes. Example answer

  2. What is the difference between enterprise value and equity value?

Show what a strong answer does

Enterprise value belongs to all capital providers, equity value to shareholders. Show the bridge with debt and cash. Example answer

  3. Depreciation goes up by $10. Walk me through the three statements.

Show what a strong answer does

Say the tax rate you assume, then move through income statement, cash flow and balance sheet so both sides balance. Example answer

  4. How do you tell whether an acquisition is accretive or dilutive?

Show what a strong answer does

Compare the buyer's earnings per share before and after, and give the quick rule on relative P/E for an all-stock deal. Example answer

  5. Pitch me a stock.

Show what a strong answer does

One company, a clear view, two reasons with numbers, the risk and what would prove you wrong. Example answer

Cases2 questions

For consulting final rounds and Capital One's Power Day.

  1. Your client is a regional grocery chain. Profits are down 20% over two years. How would you structure the problem?

Show what a strong answer does

Split profit into revenue and costs, ask which moved, and propose where to look first. Example answer

  2. A coffee chain is opening a new store. How many cups a day does it need to sell to break even?

Show what a strong answer does

Write the break-even in words, then fill in the numbers and say whether the answer looks reachable. Example answer

More to prepare with

Superday mistakes
  • Treating lunch as a break

Lunch or a coffee with the team is part of the day. Ask good questions and keep it professional.

  • One story for every room

Several interviewers may ask the same question. Have two stories for each theme so a repeat question gets a fresh example.

  • No questions for senior people

Penn's career office warns you will likely meet senior bankers who ask what you want to know. Prepare two per person.

  • Carrying a bad interview into the next

Each interviewer starts fresh with you. Reset in the gap and give the next room your full energy.

  • Rusty technicals by the afternoon

Practice answers out loud until they are short and correct, so the last room hears the same quality as the first.

How to prepare for a superday

A week is enough if the basics are already in place.

  1. A week before

Read the agenda and the names

Note the format, how many interviews and who. Look up each interviewer's group and a recent deal or project.

  2. A week before

    Write your story bank

Six true stories: leading, teamwork, a failure, a conflict, a hard problem and going beyond. Each fits in two minutes.

  3. Three to five days

    Drill out loud

Bankers: accounting, valuation and a deal you follow, every day. Consultants: two full cases a day, math by hand.

  4. The day before

    Get the logistics right

Check the address or video link and dress code. Bring three to five copies of your resume if it is in person.

  5. That evening

    Send thank-you notes

A short, specific note to each interviewer, using the detail you wrote down.

Questions people ask

What is a superday?

The final round of interviews at a bank or firm, with several interviews back to back, usually on one day. Goldman Sachs and Deutsche Bank use the name. Most consulting firms call it the final round.

How many interviews are in a superday?

Goldman Sachs says it typically conducts two to five for campus hires, depending on the division. A Morgan Stanley intern described six 20-minute interviews. Your invitation gives the number.

How long does a superday last?

Most of a day or a long morning. Banks do not publish the length. A 2020 Vanderbilt career guide described about 8am to 6pm with up to 8 to 12 interviews, which is at the long end.

Is a superday technical or behavioral?

Both. Colorado College's career center says superdays focus on fit, with technical questions still common. Expect your strongest technicals early with junior bankers and more fit with senior ones.

Is a superday virtual or in person?

It depends on the firm. Deutsche Bank says in most cases in person, Moelis says onsite, and Capital One's Power Day is virtual. Goldman Sachs does not say, so check your invitation.

What should I bring to a superday?

Several copies of your resume (Colorado College suggests three to five), a notepad and pen, and your questions for each interviewer. On video, have a quiet room and your resume beside the screen.

How soon do you hear back after a superday?

Often quickly. Vanderbilt's career guide says offers usually come the same day or the next. Capital One says you will most often hear within two weeks.

What is the difference between a superday and an assessment center?

An assessment center adds group or written exercises to the interviews and is the usual name in Europe. Deutsche Bank calls its final stage Assessment Centre/Super Day.

Is Soreno affiliated with any bank or firm?

No. Soreno is an independent practice tool and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by any firm named on this page. The sample day and the question notes are Soreno's own.
