Capital One Power Day, and how to prepare

The Power Day is Capital One's final round: a series of virtual interviews, on video, about you and the skills you bring. Depending on the role it mixes job fit, behavioral, case and technical interviews.

Updated

  • The final round. It comes after the recruiter screen and any test or pre-screen.
  • Virtual, on video. Capital One asks you to stay on camera for every interview.
  • Job fit for everyone. All candidates do one or two job fit interviews.
  • Cases for most business roles. Business analysts do two to three cases and a product strategy talk.
  • Fast answer. Students most often hear from their recruiter within two weeks.

The interviews in a Power Day

Capital One says the interviews vary by position and may include these four:

  • Job fit

All candidates complete one or two. They assess your aptitude for the role, the team and Capital One's culture.

  • Behavioral

Used for most positions, in the form “Tell me about a time when…”. Interviewers assess competencies such as problem solving, influence or results focus.

  • Case

You solve a real-life business problem while the interviewer gauges your strategic thinking and your analytical and quantitative skills. Business analysts do two to three and a product strategy conversation.

  • Technical

Among student programs, Cyber Security and Technology Development. Data science candidates also hand in a take-home Data Science Challenge before the Power Day.

From Capital One's what to expect page, its business analyst article and its student and grad questions.

The steps before the Power Day

Capital One's general process. Which steps you get depends on the position.

See each step
  1. Step 1

    Online assessment, for some roles

An automated test of skills like communication, customer focus, leadership and problem solving. Among student programs, Analyst Development and Technology Development require one.

  2. Step 2

    Recruiter screen

A phone call about the position, your resume and the company. Some student programs hold a first round interview with a recruiter or hiring manager instead.

  3. Step 3

    Virtual test, for some positions

An hour-long exam on your knowledge of the position.

  4. Step 4

    Hiring manager pre-screen

A 30-minute phone interview with the hiring manager about the role and your background. Business analysts typically start their interviews with a mini case.

  5. Step 5

    Power Day

Your recruiter invites you to the series of interviews, all on video.

  6. After

    The decision

For student and grad programs, most often from your recruiter within two weeks.

12 practice questions for a Power Day

Soreno's own questions in the shapes Capital One describes: break-even, profit, growth and the competencies its behavioral interviews assess.

Break-even and pricing3 questions

Capital One's examples: units to break even, a $5 sandwich promotion.

  1. A coffee chain is opening a new store. How many cups a day does it need to sell to break even?

Show what a strong answer does

Write the break-even in words first, then the numbers, and say whether the answer looks reachable. Example answer

  2. Your client's main competitor has just cut prices by 20%. How should the client respond?

Show what a strong answer does

Work out the volume a matching cut would need to keep profit flat before you recommend matching it. Example answer

  3. An airline is deciding whether to raise its checked-bag fee. How would you think about it?

Show what a strong answer does

Revenue per bag against bags lost and customers who leave, then a recommendation and a way to test it. Example answer

Profit2 questions

Capital One's example: grow the profits of a bus route.

  1. Your client is a regional grocery chain. Profits are down 20% over two years. How would you structure the problem?

Show what a strong answer does

Split profit into revenue and costs, ask which moved, and propose where to look first. Example answer

  2. An airline's profits are falling even though it is carrying more passengers. What is going on?

Show what a strong answer does

Volume is up, so look at revenue and cost per passenger before you list causes. Example answer

Growth and product strategy3 questions

Close to a card or bank product decision.

  1. A regional bank's customer growth has stalled. How would you structure the problem?

Show what a strong answer does

Separate new customers from customers leaving, then ask which segment changed. Example answer

  2. A streaming service's monthly churn has doubled in a year. How would you find out why?

Show what a strong answer does

Find which customers are leaving and when, before you guess at the reason. Example answer

  3. A software company is launching a new analytics add-on for its existing customers. How would you set the price?

Show what a strong answer does

Value to the customer, cost and what rivals charge, then one price and how you would test it. Example answer

Behavioral and job fit4 questions

Problem solving, influence and results focus are the competencies Capital One names.

  1. Tell me about a difficult problem you solved.

Show what a strong answer does

Show how you broke the problem down and what you did, with the result in a number. Example answer

  2. Tell me about a time you changed someone's mind.

Show what a strong answer does

Influence without authority: what they believed, the evidence you brought and what changed. Example answer

  3. Tell me about a time you achieved something difficult against real obstacles.

Show what a strong answer does

Results focus: the goal, the obstacle, what you kept doing when it got hard and the result. Example answer

  4. Why do you want to work at this firm?

Show what a strong answer does

For job fit: two specific reasons about the program and the work, not the brand. Example answer

More to prepare with

Power Day mistakes
  • Letting the math get messy

A Capital One recruiter warns that if you lose track of your numbers early, you can get stuck later when you need them.

  • Using a standard framework

Capital One says it does not use standard frameworks in its own projects and wants one built for the problem.

  • No recommendation

Lead with the answer, support it with evidence from the case and add risks and next steps.

  • Talking about your resume in the case

Capital One's tip: other interviews cover your experience. In the case, let your work on the problem show it.

  • Going off camera

Capital One requires video for all virtual interviews. Tell your recruiter early if something will prevent it.

How to prepare for a Power Day

From Capital One's own advice, in the order to do it.

  1. Two weeks before

    Do Capital One's sample case

The Sammy's Sandwich Shop case on its strategy interviewing page shows the real shape: factors, a weighted average, break-even, then a recommendation.

  2. Every day

    Practice full cases out loud

Capital One suggests as many full cases out loud as possible, ideally with a partner. Drill weighted averages and break-even by hand.

  3. A week before

    Prepare the stories

One story each for problem solving, influence and results focus, plus your reasons for this program.

  4. The day before

    Set up the room

A quiet space, camera on, paper and pen. Ask your recruiter whether a calculator is allowed for your program.

  5. On the day

    Talk through your thinking

Ask clarifying questions, explain your approach before you calculate and keep your numbers organized.

Questions people ask

What is a Capital One Power Day?

The last step of Capital One's process: a series of interviews about you and the skills and insights you bring to your work. It is held virtually, on video.

How many interviews are in a Capital One Power Day?

It depends on the role. Capital One says every candidate does one or two job fit interviews, and business analysts do two to three case interviews and a product strategy conversation. It does not publish one number for all roles.

Is the Power Day in person?

No. Capital One says it continues to use virtual interviewing, and candidates must stay on video for every interview.

Does every Power Day have a case interview?

No. Capital One says not all positions require case interviews. Campus, business analyst, product manager and finance positions typically do. Among student programs, Investment Banking Development and Design Development list no case.

Can I use a calculator at a Capital One Power Day?

For Strategy Consulting, Capital One says it allows calculators when appropriate. It does not state a policy for other programs, so ask your recruiter.

What happens before the Power Day?

Depending on the role: an online assessment, a recruiter screen, an hour-long virtual test, a 30-minute hiring manager pre-screen, and a take-home Data Science Challenge for data science roles.

When do you hear back after a Power Day?

For student and grad programs, Capital One says you will most often hear from your recruiter within two weeks.

Is a Power Day the same as a superday?

It is Capital One's name for the same idea: a final round of several interviews. Banks such as Goldman Sachs call theirs a superday.

Is Soreno affiliated with Capital One?

No. Soreno is an independent practice tool and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Capital One. The practice questions and notes on this page are Soreno's own.
