McKinsey Forward program: what it is and how to apply

McKinsey Forward is a free 10 week online learning program run by McKinsey.org, about 2 hours a week, that teaches problem solving, communication, adaptability, relationships and digital and AI skills. It is open to people with less than 5 years of work experience in more than 130 countries, including the US. Finishing earns a certificate of completion and a digital badge. As of October 28, 2026, applications are closed and you can register your interest, and McKinsey says Forward is not a pathway to a job at McKinsey. Forward teaches structured problem solving, and McKinsey's interviews test it. Soreno, an AI voice interview practice app for consulting, investment banking and other finance candidates, runs McKinsey-style cases and personal experience questions with follow-ups and scored feedback.

Does Forward help you get into McKinsey?

Here is what McKinsey says, then our own advice, labeled as ours.

  • McKinsey: not a pathway to a job

Its Forward FAQ says taking part "does not constitute employment with McKinsey, nor is it a pathway to employment at McKinsey". It points people who want a job to the McKinsey careers site.

  • McKinsey: a badge, not a credential

Graduates get a certificate of completion and a shareable badge. The FAQ adds that McKinsey is not an accredited educational institution, so Forward gives no accredited qualification.

  • McKinsey: jobs have their own steps

For most consulting roles, McKinsey's interviewing page lists Solve, a gamified problem-solving assessment, plus personal experience and problem-solving interviews.

  • Our advice: take it for the skills

The Problem Solving and Communicating for Impact courses train the same habits a case interview tests: define the problem, structure it and lead with the answer. Use it as a start, then practice real cases out loud.

  • Our advice: talk about what changed

If you list Forward on a resume, be ready to say what you now do differently and the result. One real example beats naming the courses.

How to apply to McKinsey Forward

McKinsey.org runs Forward in cohorts every year, with application cycles that open country by country. It publishes no fixed dates. As of October 28, 2026, its FAQ says applications are not open.

Six steps, from interest to badge
  1. Step 1

    Check you qualify

Your country, work experience under 5 years (or an exception), high school or equivalent, and a program language.

    From McKinsey.org: Forward FAQ.

  2. Step 2

    Register your interest

While applications are closed, the interest form gets you updates and an email when a cycle opens in your country. Registering is not the same as applying.

    From McKinsey.org: Forward overview.

  3. Step 3

    Apply when your country opens

Fill in the application with a valid email. You give your employment status and, if employed, accurate employer details for verification. Employers don't sponsor participants.

    From McKinsey.org: Forward FAQ.

  4. Up to 15 business days

    Hear back

An automatic email confirms your application. McKinsey.org then tells you within up to 15 business days whether you are accepted. It does not explain individual rejections.

    From McKinsey.org: Forward FAQ.

  5. 10 weeks

Finish Core Skills by the deadlines

Once accepted, you are enrolled on the learning platform with start dates and deadlines. Miss a requirement and you can't move on to the Network level. You can't join a cohort already in progress.

    From McKinsey.org: Forward FAQ.

  6. After

Get the badge, join the Network

Graduates get a certificate and a digital badge, then ongoing access to the Network level. Not finished? You can reapply and restart Core Skills from the beginning.

    From McKinsey.org: Forward FAQ.

13 questions to practice alongside Forward

McKinsey.org describes an application form for Forward and no interview, as of October 2026. These are for the McKinsey interviews many learners aim at next, grouped by the Forward skill they use. Our own wording, with what a strong answer does.

Problem solving4 questions

Forward's Problem Solving course, tested in McKinsey's problem-solving interview.

  1. Your client is a regional grocery chain. Profits are down 20% over two years. How would you structure the problem?

    What a strong answer does

Splits profit into revenue and costs, asks a sharp question or two, then picks the branch to test first and says why. Practice it, see a model answer

    • “Which branch would you look at first?”
    • “What data would you ask the client for?”
  2. An airline's profits are falling even though it is carrying more passengers. What is going on?

    What a strong answer does

Sees that volume is up, so the answer sits in price per passenger or cost per passenger, and tests each with a number. Practice it, see a model answer

    • “What would you check in the fare mix?”
  3. How many cups of coffee are sold in New York City each day?

    What a strong answer does

States a clear method before any math, rounds to easy numbers and sanity checks the result. Practice it, see a model answer

    • “Which assumption moves the answer most?”
  4. Tell me about a difficult problem you solved.

    What a strong answer does

Your own reasoning step by step: how you defined the problem, what you ruled out and what changed because of you. Practice it, see a model answer

    • “What did you try first that didn't work?”
    • “How did you know it was solved?”
Communicating for impact3 questions

Forward's Communicating for Impact course, tested in every interview.

  1. You have finished the analysis on a market entry case and the CEO walks in. What is your recommendation?

    What a strong answer does

Leads with the answer, gives two or three reasons with numbers, then names the main risk and the next step. Practice it, see a model answer

  2. Tell me about a time you changed someone's mind.

    What a strong answer does

Why they disagreed, the evidence you chose for that person and the moment they moved. Practice it, see a model answer

    • “Why did that argument land with them?”
  3. Walk me through your resume.

    What a strong answer does

Two minutes, in order, each step leading to the next, ending on why this role now. Mention Forward only if it changed a choice you made. Practice it, see a model answer

Adaptability and relationships3 questions

Forward's Adaptability and Relationships courses, tested in McKinsey's personal experience interview.

  1. Tell me about a time you had to work without clear direction.

    What a strong answer does

How you made the problem concrete, the call you made with what you knew and how you checked it. Practice it, see a model answer

    • “What would you do differently now?”
  2. Tell me about a time you received tough feedback.

    What a strong answer does

The feedback in plain words, how it felt for a moment and the specific change you made after. Practice it, see a model answer

  3. Tell me about a conflict you had with a teammate.

    What a strong answer does

Their view stated fairly, what you did to fix it and how you work together now. Practice it, see a model answer

    • “What did you give up to reach agreement?”
Why consulting, why McKinsey3 questions

The questions that test your reasons.

  1. Why do you want to go into consulting?

    What a strong answer does

Two reasons tied to things you have done, and what you want to learn in your first years. Practice it, see a model answer

  2. Why do you want to work at this firm?

    What a strong answer does

Something you learned from McKinsey's own people or pages, tied to the work you want to do. Practice it, see a model answer

  3. What did you learn in Forward, and how have you used it?

    What a strong answer does

One concrete habit you now use at work or school, the situation and the result. Not a list of course names.

    • “What would you teach a friend from it?”
