How to get into private equity, route by route
Most people get into private equity after a year or two as an investment banking analyst, hired as associates in a fast round of interviews run with headhunters, called on-cycle recruiting. Others come from consulting, an MBA or another deal job, or join a firm's analyst program straight from college.
Updated
- Banking is the main road. Buyout firms recruit banking analysts for associate jobs that start one or two years later.
- Headhunters run the search. CPI says it draws on 50+ banks and consulting firms and assesses over 3,000 candidates a year.
- The timing moved. Banks pushed back on early offers in 2025, and firms delayed their round to January 2026.
- The interview is technical. A paper LBO, a modeling test or case study, and a deal you can defend.
- Associates: $140,000 to $200,000. Median base at four large funds in US H-1B filings, before bonus.

How on-cycle recruiting works now
What Bloomberg and the Financial Times reported in 2025 and 2026, when banks and buyout firms fought over the timing.
An offer for a job years away
Buyout firms recruit banking analysts for associate jobs that typically start one or two years later, Bloomberg reported in July 2025. By 2022 many were contacting first-year analysts a few weeks into the job.
Banks pushed back in 2025
JPMorgan told incoming analysts in June 2025 it would fire them for accepting a future job elsewhere before starting or within 18 months. Goldman Sachs and Citi asked analysts to attest they had not, and Bank of America analysts who accept face a move to another area.
Firms moved the class of 2027
Apollo and General Atlantic said in June 2025 they would not interview the class of 2027 that year. Firms launched their delayed recruiting drive in January 2026, inviting candidates to interviews with less than 24 hours' notice, the Financial Times reported.
Still a race in 2026
In October 2026 Citi cut its analyst program to two years from three, partly to keep analysts from leaving for buyout firms. Its banking co-head said private equity still interviews very early in a banker's career.

Questions people ask
What is the best way to get into private equity?
For most associate jobs, a year or two as an investment banking analyst, then on-cycle recruiting through headhunters. Consulting, an MBA and firms' own analyst programs for college students are the other main routes.
What is on-cycle recruiting?
The rush in which buyout firms interview banking analysts for associate jobs that start one or two years later. It runs through headhunters and can be over in days. In 2025 several firms delayed it, and their delayed drive came in January 2026.
Can you get into private equity without investment banking?
Yes. EQT says many of its associates come from consulting, engineering or other analytical fields, and Blackstone, General Atlantic and Apollo hire students directly. From another background, learn the LBO and apply off-cycle.
Can my bank fire me for accepting a private equity offer?
Read your bank's policy. In 2025 JPMorgan said it would fire analysts who accept a future job within their first 18 months, Goldman Sachs and Citi asked analysts to attest, and Bank of America said those who accept face a move, Bloomberg reported.
Do you need an MBA to get into private equity?
No. Firms hire associates before business school and analysts from college. For MBA students, Yale SOM's career office says on-cycle internship recruiting starts in early fall of year one.
How much do private equity associates make?
A median base of $140,000 to $200,000 at Blackstone, KKR, Apollo and Warburg Pincus in US H-1B filings, January 2025 to June 2026, before bonus. Our private equity salary page has each firm.
Which headhunters recruit for private equity?
