Consulting firm interview guides, 19 firms

Most consulting firms pair case interviews with behavioral or fit interviews, and several put an online test first, but few publish one global process and fewer say who leads the case. Below is what each of 19 firms says on its own site, with the source, and our full guide for the 17 that publish enough to write one.

Updated

  • 19 firms, one row each. Strategy firms first, then the Big Four, then other firms.
  • Only the firms' own pages. Each row cites one page on the firm's site, read in October 2026.
  • 17 full guides. For every firm whose site says enough to fill one.
  • Who leads the case? Rarely said. Of these firms, only Capital One says so, for its strategy roles.

Where firms differ

Four things that change from firm to firm, from their own pages. Our guides have the details.

  • A test first, or not

McKinsey uses Solve for most consulting roles. Bain's digital assessment takes about 30 to 40 minutes, and Roland Berger tests permanent hires but not interns. L.E.K. describes none on its official pages.

  • Who leads the case

Capital One says its strategy cases tend to be interviewer-led. McKinsey, BCG, Bain, Oliver Wyman, Kearney and L.E.K. don't say.

  • Written and group cases

Strategy& UK gives one case as a slide pack. Roland Berger Amsterdam's final day has a written case you present to four consultants. FTI may add a group exercise.

  • Calculators

McKinsey bars them in every assessment and interview: pen and paper only. Bain allows one only in its digital assessment, and Capital One allows one when appropriate.

McKinseySolve, experience and case interviews

Most consulting roles include Solve, a gamified problem-solving assessment. Most client-facing roles have personal experience interviews and problem-solving (case) interviews, and some add an expertise interview. McKinsey publishes practice cases but doesn't say who leads the case.

8 questions that come up at most firms

Our own wording. Firms ask these in their own styles, so practice each one more than one way.

Fit2 questions

Nearly every firm here describes a behavioral or fit interview.

  1. Why consulting?

    What a strong answer does

What the work is, and one moment from your own experience that drew you to it. Keep it under a minute. Practice it, see a model answer

  2. Why this firm?

    What a strong answer does

Bain says it looks for people who can explain why they want to join it specifically. Name something you can only say about this firm. Practice it, see a model answer

Cases6 questions

The shapes that recur across firms' sample cases.

  1. A regional grocery chain's profits fell 20% in two years. Why?

    What a strong answer does

Split profit into revenue and cost, go one level deeper on each, then say which branch you'd test first and why. Practice it, see a model answer

  2. Should a European e-bike maker enter the US?

    What a strong answer does

Market size and growth, rivals, the client's edge and the cost of getting in. End with yes or no. Practice it, see a model answer

  3. A coffee shop opens next month. What daily sales would cover its costs?

    What a strong answer does

Set up the math before you calculate, as Capital One advises: monthly fixed costs over the margin per cup. End on whether that many cups a day is realistic. Practice it, see a model answer

  4. Estimate the annual US market for electric scooters.

    What a strong answer does

Choose between starting from riders or from units sold, and give the reason. A second route makes a good check on the total. Practice it, see a model answer

  5. How could a movie theater chain grow its revenue?

    What a strong answer does

Group ideas before listing them: more visits, more spent per visit, new uses for the building. Practice it, see a model answer

  6. The CEO asks for your recommendation. What do you say?

    What a strong answer does

Lead with the decision, back it with two numbers, flag the biggest risk and say what you would do first. Practice it, see a model answer

Questions people ask

Where does this information come from?

From each firm's own careers pages, linked on its row and read on October 19, 2026 (PwC, KPMG and Booz Allen on October 15). Processes change by country and year, so confirm yours with your recruiter.

Which consulting firms publish sample cases?

McKinsey, BCG (interactive quizzes, and a case library on BCG France's page), Bain, Oliver Wyman, L.E.K., Kearney, Roland Berger (two cases on video), ZS, EY-Parthenon Australia and Capital One all post practice cases on their own sites. Accenture's 2018 workbook and Deloitte's US case prep tool have more.

Which firms have an online test before interviews?

McKinsey (Solve, for most consulting roles), Bain (a digital assessment), Roland Berger (for permanent hires), ZS (for some roles), PwC US (an online assessment after you apply), FTI Consulting (numerical and written tests, varying by country) and Capital One (an online assessment for some roles) say so on their own pages. BCG, Strategy& and EY-Parthenon describe tests on some country pages.

Are consulting cases interviewer-led or candidate-led?

Most firms don't say. Capital One says its strategy cases tend to be interviewer-led, so practice both styles.

How many interviews do consulting firms have?

It varies. Kearney says four to five for general consulting, ZS two to four rounds and Deloitte US two to three rounds.

Why is there no full guide for FTI, Alvarez & Marsal or Guidehouse?

Their own sites say too little about their interviews to fill one. Each row has what they do publish.
