Strategy& case interview, office by office
At Strategy& Amsterdam the case is a discussion of a scenario usually based on a real client engagement the interviewer worked on. Strategy&'s case tips, nearly word for word on the Amsterdam, Middle East and LBS pages, ask for a simple structure explained out loud and a clear recommendation at the end.
Updated
- Two kinds of case in London. Graduates get an unstructured case and a structured one built on a slide pack.
- Ten minutes with the slides. Then you develop recommendations for the client, in an interview of about 45 minutes.
- Fit is the other half. Amsterdam and the LBS page both put the case at about half the interview.
- Counts differ by office. From two in London's first round to six over two rounds in Amsterdam.
What Strategy& is testing
London and Amsterdam say what they want to see:
How you structure
London says its cases are designed to show how you think when structuring a client's problem, rather than whether you land on the right answer.
Curiosity and something extra
London wants Associates who are intellectually curious and highly motivated, and who bring something beyond academics, like teamwork from sport or leadership from work.
Amsterdam's three fit headings
Lead Self, Lead Others and Motivation. Expect questions on leadership, teamwork and other experiences, and on why consulting and why Strategy&.
Hypotheses and a stand
Amsterdam's checklist says to use hypotheses and stay in the lead. The Middle East tips end on taking a stand with a recommendation.

12 Strategy&-style questions
Written by Soreno around London's two case formats and Amsterdam's fit headings. Strategy& and PwC have no part in them.
Unstructured cases4 questions
An open prompt after a few questions about you. Strategy&'s tips say to summarize the case back first.
A European auto supplier's profits are falling as carmakers switch to electric. What should it do?
What a strong answer does
Which parts of the business shrink with combustion engines and which don't? Size the gap and the ways to fill it.
A large food company wants to buy a plant-based snack startup. Should it?
What a strong answer does
Market, the startup's real position, fit with the buyer and price. Give a view early and test it, as a hypothesis-led case expects. Practice it, see a model answer
A furniture retailer with 60 stores wants to sell online. How would you structure the decision?
What a strong answer does
What online adds in customers and margin against what it takes from stores, and what the client must build. Keep the structure short and let the interviewer react. Practice it, see a model answer
An airline is deciding whether to raise its checked-bag fee. What's your advice?
What a strong answer does
Revenue gained per bag against bags lost and travelers who switch airlines. Stick to the question asked, then recommend. Practice it, see a model answer
Structured cases, from a slide pack4 questions
You read first, then answer. Practice noting one point per slide before you speak.
Six slides on a new drug cover patients, rival prices and what insurers pay. What launch price do you recommend?
What a strong answer does
Pull the two or three slides that set the price range, pick a number inside it and say what would move it. Practice it, see a model answer
The slides show a hospital group's costs by site and by service. Where would you cut first?
What a strong answer does
Find the sites and services furthest from the group's average, check volume before blaming cost and rank cuts by size and speed.
A chart shows a telecom's subscribers flat but revenue falling. What does it tell you?
What a strong answer does
Revenue per subscriber is falling, so ask about price, plan mix and discounts. Say what each answer would mean for the client.
Using the population figures on the slide, estimate the US market for wedding dresses.
What a strong answer does
Weddings a year, the share buying a new dress and an average price. Use the slide's numbers where they exist and flag what you assumed. Practice it, see a model answer
Fit, in Amsterdam's headings4 questions
Lead Self, Lead Others and Motivation, plus London's ask for something beyond academics.
Tell me about a time you had to learn something hard, fast.
What a strong answer does
Lead Self. What you didn't know, how you learned it and the proof that it worked. Practice it, see a model answer
Tell me about a time you led a group to a result that mattered.
What a strong answer does
Lead Others. Your own decisions, a moment someone disagreed and the result, with a number if you have one. Practice it, see a model answer
Why Strategy&, and how does it fit within PwC?
What a strong answer does
Name the work you want, people you spoke to and the office. Its US MBA page asks you to review the PwC Professional framework, so know it. Practice it, see a model answer
What would you bring beyond your degree?
What a strong answer does
One example from sport, work or a project, told with specifics. London names teamwork and leadership as the kind of thing it means. Practice it, see a model answer
More to prepare with
What trips up Strategy& candidates
Reading every slide equally
You have about ten minutes in London's structured case. Find the slides that answer the client's question first.
A complicated framework
Its tips say the simpler the framework, the better. Explain it briefly and let the interviewer comment.
Not pausing
Its tips ask you to pause so the interviewer can course correct, and to take their advice.
No recommendation
Be prepared to take a stand and make one, its tips say, even with little time left.
Treating fit as small talk
In Amsterdam and on the LBS page the case is about half the interview. Most of the rest is your story.
How to prepare for Strategy&
Its tip
Practice with a partner
Strategy& says to practice cases out loud with a partner rather than read them ahead. Amsterdam gives invited candidates a practice case with a consultant.
Strategy& Middle East: business case prepStrategy& Netherlands: recruitment process
Its tip
Summarize, then structure
Listen, ask about anything unclear, summarize the case in your own words, take a minute, then explain a simple framework.
Its tip
Mind the clock
Be aware of the time you have, work through the case out loud and keep time for a recommendation.
US MBA
Review the PwC Professional
