Altman Solon case interview, telecom, media, tech

All Altman Solon consulting candidates take behavioral and business case interviews, and most processes finish in three to four weeks. In the Americas, analysts complete a 30-minute online assessment, then two rounds: two 1-hour interviews, each with an interviewer-led case and short behavioral part, then two more plus a 45-minute behavioral interview. Summer and winter analysts have one round. To get used to answering an interviewer's questions out loud, Soreno, an AI voice interview practice app for consulting, investment banking and other finance candidates, runs a free growth strategy case with no sign-up.

Updated

  • Assessment first in the Americas. About 30 minutes, partly timed, due within 48 hours of applying.
  • Interviewer-led cases. Each 1-hour Americas interview pairs one with a brief behavioral part.
  • It varies by region. Sydney and Singapore list three case study interviews, and Sydney graduates have two rounds of them.
  • Three to four weeks. Most processes finish in that time, though it varies by location.
  • All TMT. Its work is only telecom, media and technology, so learn those industries.

A worked telecom case, led by the interviewer

Altman Solon's student page calls its Americas cases interviewer-led, which we read as the interviewer steering through questions. This case runs that way, in the sector it advises.

Example case: should an investor fund a fiber build?Soreno's invented case

Our own case, not Altman Solon's. Every number is made up for practice, and the math ignores connection costs and financing.

  1. Question 1

What would you want to know?

An investor may fund fiber internet in a mid-sized town. Ask about homes covered, the build cost, how many will sign up, the price, the margin and what rivals like cable offer.

  2. Question 2

Profit of about $14.4M a year

    100,000 homes at 40% sign-up is 40,000 customers. At $60 a month, each brings $720 a year. At a 50% margin, that's $14,400,000.

    Free case math drills
  3. Question 3

    Payback in about 7 years

    Building costs $1,000 a home, or $100,000,000. Divided by $14,400,000, that's about 6.9 years.

  4. Question 4

    What if cable fights back?

Say sign-ups only reach 30%. Profit drops to $10,800,000, and payback stretches to about 9.3 years. So the sign-up rate is the number to test first.

  5. Recommend

    A conditional yes

Go ahead if early signs support about 40%, such as pre-registrations by neighborhood, and build the strongest areas first. Say what would stop you: a cable price cut or an upgrade.

12 telecom, media and tech questions

Written by us, across telecom, media and technology and its services, such as strategy, go-to-market and M&A. Two behavioral questions close the list.

Telecom4 questions

Network costs are large and fixed, so volume decides a lot.

  1. A mobile operator's revenue per user is falling. What would you look at?

    What a strong answer does

Split by plan, customer group and region. Find whether it's price cuts, cheaper plans or a shift in who's joining.

  2. Should a tower company buy 2,000 towers from a mobile operator?

    What a strong answer does

Ask how many tenants each can host, the rent and the price. Extra tenants are where the profit comes from, so test that first.

  3. A cable company is losing broadband customers to fiber. How should it respond?

    What a strong answer does

Find where it overlaps with fiber and why people switch. Compare upgrading the network, cutting prices and bundling.

  4. A town has 50,000 homes. Fiber costs $1,200 per home, and each customer earns $400 a year in profit. With 40% sign-up, what's the payback?

    What a strong answer does

$60M to build and $8M a year in profit, so 7.5 years. Then ask how fast sign-ups would really come.

Media3 questions

Think about what's worth paying for, and who gives up what.

  1. A streaming service wants to add a premium tier. Is it a good idea?

    What a strong answer does

Estimate who would trade up, what they'd pay and what content or features justify it. Count only the extra profit, after those who'd have paid anyway.

  2. Should a regional sports network sell directly to fans?

    What a strong answer does

Compare the fees it gets from cable with what fans would pay directly. Say how many must sign up to break even.

  3. A newspaper's subscribers are aging. How should it grow?

    What a strong answer does

Ask which readers stay and why. Test new bundles or prices for younger readers, and be clear about the cost of the content.

Technology and deals3 questions

Investors want the risk stated plainly.

  1. A private equity firm is considering buying a data center operator. What would you diligence?

    What a strong answer does

Demand by customer, contract length, power access and rivals. End with what would make you walk away.

  2. A software company wants to raise prices 10%. How would you decide?

    What a strong answer does

Look at usage and renewals by customer type and at rival prices. Work out how many could leave before the increase stops paying.

  3. A subscription software firm grows 40% a year but loses money. Should its investors worry?

    What a strong answer does

Check what a new customer costs against what it brings over its life. Growth that pays back is fine, so say which case this is. Practice it, see a model answer
