Strategy& interview questions, fit and case

Strategy& runs its process office by office, and the offices that describe their interviews pair questions about you with a case. In London the first interview opens with questions about your background, personal experiences, work experience and motivations for joining Strategy&. In Amsterdam every interview includes a discussion of your leadership, team skills and motivation. In the US each of three interviews has a case and a behavioral part. To rehearse both out loud, Soreno, an AI voice interview practice app for consulting, investment banking and other finance candidates, runs Strategy&-style cases and fit questions with follow-ups and scored feedback.

Updated

  • Questions about you, then a case. London, Amsterdam and the US each pair the two.
  • Your motivation, twice. For consulting in general and for Strategy& specifically, in Amsterdam's words.
  • Lead self, lead others. Amsterdam names these two, plus motivation, as what it asks about.
  • Two kinds of case in London. One unstructured, one with a slide pack from a real project.
  • No single right answer. Strategy& says it wants your thought process and logical conclusions.

What each office asks about you

Strategy& says each territory has its own process. These are the three offices that describe their interviews in the most detail on Strategy&'s own pages.

Strategy&'s case adviceFrom its Amsterdam and Middle East pages

We found no sample cases on its careers pages, but two offices publish the same tips.

  1. Start

Say it back in your own words

Summarize the case to confirm you understand it, and take a minute to think. Don't be afraid of the silence.

Strategy& Middle East: business case prep
  2. Structure

The simpler the framework, the better

Explain it briefly so the interviewer can comment, then stick to it.

  3. Throughout

Use hypotheses and stay in the lead

Amsterdam's reminders: work your numbers, articulate your assumptions, stick to the question and synthesise your findings.

    Strategy& Netherlands: recruitment process
  4. End

    Take a stand

Make a recommendation from what you reached, even with little data. Amsterdam adds next steps for the client.

What Strategy& looks for

No scoring rubric is public. Amsterdam names three things it asks about, and London says what kind of candidate it wants:

  • Lead self

Develop and learn through every opportunity, take care of your own wellbeing and remain steady under pressure.

  • Lead others

Know when and how to lead, be part of a team, get things done, and handle and drive transformational change.

  • Motivation

Choosing consulting, and a deepening understanding of how business works, how it is changing and why that matters.

  • Something beyond grades

London looks for a strong academic record, curiosity and motivation, and also something more than academic credentials, such as team skills from sport or leadership from work.

13 Strategy& interview questions

We found no published questions on its careers pages, so these are in our words, built on the topics its offices name. Each note says what a strong answer does.

Your background and motivation5 questions

Our wording, on the topics London lists for the start of its first interview.

  1. Walk me through your background.

    What a strong answer does

Two minutes, in order, with the choices you made and why. End on what brought you to strategy work. Practice it, see a model answer

  2. Tell me about a personal experience that shaped how you work.

    What a strong answer does

London asks about personal experiences, not just jobs. One moment, what you took from it and where it shows up now.

  3. Why consulting?

    What a strong answer does

Amsterdam assesses your motivation for consulting in general. Two reasons from things you have done. Practice it, see a model answer

  4. Why Strategy& rather than another strategy firm?

    What a strong answer does

Amsterdam also asks why Strategy& specifically. Name something you learned from its people or its work and tie it to the work you want. Practice it, see a model answer

    • “Who have you spoken to here?”
    • “What would make you choose another firm?”
  5. What would you bring beyond your degree?

    What a strong answer does

Strategy& UK looks for something more than academic credentials, such as team skills from sport or leadership from work. One example with a result. Practice it, see a model answer

Lead self, lead others5 questions

Our wording, one or two per area Amsterdam names.

  1. Tell me about a time you stayed steady under pressure.

    What a strong answer does

Lead self. What the pressure was, what you did to keep your head and what came out of it. Practice it, see a model answer

  2. Tell me about a time you learned from a setback.

    What a strong answer does

Lead self, learning through every opportunity. Own it in one sentence, then what you changed. Practice it, see a model answer

  3. Tell me about a time you led a group through a change.

    What a strong answer does

Lead others, handling and driving change. Why the change, who resisted and how you brought them along. Practice it, see a model answer

    • “Who was hardest to convince?”
    • “What would you do differently?”
  4. Tell me about a time you got something done as a team member, not the leader.

    What a strong answer does

Lead others includes knowing when to be part of a team. Show your part and how you made the leader's job easier.

  5. What change in business are you following right now?

    What a strong answer does

Motivation, in Amsterdam's words: how business works, how it is changing and why this matters. One change, why it matters and who wins.

Case questions3 questions

Our wording, in the two formats London describes. For the case itself, see our Strategy& case interview guide.

  1. A regional bank's customer growth has stalled. How would you structure the problem?

    What a strong answer does

An unstructured case. Say it back, take a minute, then a simple structure the interviewer can comment on. Work from a hypothesis. Practice it, see a model answer

  2. You have ten minutes with a short slide pack on a client's problem. What do you recommend?

    What a strong answer does

London's structured case gives you about 10 minutes with a slide pack from a real project. Find the slide that answers the question, then recommend and give next steps.

  3. You have little data and the time is nearly up. What is your recommendation?

    What a strong answer does

Strategy& says to take a stand anyway, from the conclusions you reached. Answer first, then the reasons and what you would check next. Practice it, see a model answer

Mistakes and how to prepare

Where Strategy& candidates slip
  • Skipping the questions about you

London's first interview and every Amsterdam interview start with you. Prepare those answers as hard as the case.

  • An answer for Strategy& that fits any firm

Amsterdam assesses motivation for Strategy& specifically. Say what you know about its work.

  • A complicated framework

Strategy& says the simpler the framework, the better. Explain it briefly and stick to it.

  • No recommendation

Strategy& asks you to take a stand at the end even with little data.

How to prepare for Strategy&'s questions

Strategy&'s own advice first. The last step is our suggestion.

  1. Its advice

    Find your office's process

Each territory has its own process and deadlines. Read your office's page before you prepare.

    From Strategy& UK: FAQs.

  2. Its advice

    Practice cases with a partner

Get cases from your school's consulting club and don't read them first. A partner who has just done a consulting internship is ideal, the Middle East page says.

Strategy& case interview guideFree Strategy&-style case

From Strategy& Middle East: business case prep.

  3. Its advice

    Prepare your questions

Amsterdam keeps the last 5 to 10 minutes of each interview for them.

    Questions to ask the interviewer

    From Strategy& Netherlands: recruitment process.

  4. Our suggestion

    Say every answer out loud

With a partner or an AI interviewer that follows up, so your stories hold up under a second question.

Rehearse Strategy&'s questions, out loud

Soreno's AI interviewer asks fit questions and runs Strategy&-style cases, follows up like a real interviewer and scores every answer.

Questions people ask

What questions does Strategy& ask in interviews?

Questions about your background, experiences and motivation for consulting and for Strategy&, plus a case. Amsterdam also asks about your leadership and team skills. Strategy& doesn't publish a list of questions.

Does Strategy& have a fit interview?

Not as a separate interview in the offices that describe it. London opens its first case interview with questions about you, and Amsterdam and the US combine the two in each interview.

How many interviews does Strategy& have?

It depends on the office. London has two in round one and a second round. Amsterdam has two rounds. The US Advisory process is one round of three. The Middle East page says three to four.

Does Strategy& publish sample cases?

We found none on its careers pages. Its Middle East page suggests getting sample cases from your school's consulting club.

What is the Strategy& structured case?

In London, a case with a slide pack from a real client project. You get about 10 minutes to look it over, then develop recommended solutions.
