Guidehouse interview, process and cases
Guidehouse's internship page lists five steps: join its talent community, apply online, an initial on-campus or virtual interview, a final round meeting its teams, then an offer. To get into its three-day Gateway to Guidehouse Life Sciences program, applicants have one behavioral and one case interview with its Life Sciences team. Guidehouse publishes no case format or sample case, so prepare for a structured business case in your practice's field and a clear 'so what' at the end. Want to rehearse a government or utility case out loud? Soreno, an AI voice interview practice app for consulting, investment banking and other finance candidates, runs a free public sector case with no sign-up.
Updated
- Two interview steps. An initial interview on campus or online, then a final round with the teams.
- Behavioral and case. Named for its Life Sciences program: one of each, with team members.
- Hired into one team. Early career hires join a team tied to their interests, not a rotation.
- Clearance on some roles. A federal posting we read asks that you can obtain a Public Trust.
- Say the so what. A Gateway participant calls it one of the best skills they took away.
A Guidehouse-style case, worked: cutting a utility's summer peak
Guidehouse's site lists energy, health, defense, financial services and state and local government among its industries, and most of its internships outside the US name energy or the energy transition. Below is an energy case we wrote, solved the way a strong candidate would talk it through, then a weak and a strong close.
Example case: Ridgeline Power must cut 200 MW of peak demandSoreno's invented case
We wrote this case. Each figure below comes from the facts in the prompt.
The prompt
Build a plant, or cut the peak?
Ridgeline Power, a utility with 800,000 homes, expects summer peak demand to beat its capacity by 200 MW within three years. The regulator asks for the lowest-cost plan. Ask first: how long must the fix last, and does the regulator count demand cuts the same as new supply? Here, ten years and yes.
Structure
Supply options against demand options
Two branches. Add supply: a new gas peaker plant or batteries. Cut demand: smart thermostat rebates for homes, and payments to large businesses that cut use on peak days. For each, ask how many MW, at what cost per MW, and how reliable.
How to build an issue treeHomes
120 MW at $250,000 per MW
If 100,000 homes enroll, 12.5% of customers, and each cuts 1.2 kW at peak, that is 120 MW. A $100 rebate plus $20 a year to run, over 10 years, costs $30 million.
Free case math drillsBusinesses
The other 80 MW for $40 million
Paying large customers $50,000 per MW a year for 10 years is $500,000 per MW, so 80 MW costs $40 million. Together the demand plan costs $70 million.
Compare
$70 million against $200 million
A 200 MW peaker plant at $1 million per MW costs $200 million, and batteries $240 million. The demand plan saves $130 million against the plant.
Test the risk
What if fewer homes sign up?
If only 75,000 homes enroll, they give 90 MW and businesses must cover 110 MW. The plan then costs $77.5 million, still far below the plant. The answer holds.
The close, with the so what: weak and strongTwo sample answers we wrote
A Gateway participant says learning to communicate the 'so what' was one of the best skills they built. Here is the difference.
Weak answer
"Demand response is cheaper"
"The thermostat program is $250,000 per MW and the business program is $500,000 per MW, and the plant is $1 million per MW, so demand response is cheaper." The numbers are right, but the regulator still doesn't know what to do or what could go wrong.
Strong answer
Decision, so what, risk, next step
"Ridgeline should cut the peak instead of building a plant. Rebates for 100,000 homes and payments to large businesses close the 200 MW gap for $70 million, against $200 million for a plant, which keeps $130 million off customers' bills. Even if a quarter fewer homes enroll, it costs $77.5 million. The risk is customers overriding thermostats on the hottest days, so I'd pilot in one district this summer and measure the real cut per home."
Why it works
It answers the question asked
The regulator asked for the lowest-cost plan. The strong close names the plan, says what it means for customers, shows it survives the main risk and gives a next step.

What Guidehouse says it looks for
Guidehouse publishes no interview rubric. These come from its Gateway program page, its early career page, its values and its own job postings.
Critical thinking and problem solving
The Gateway program asks for strong critical thinking, problem solving and creativity. A federal posting adds thriving on unstructured problems.
Oral and written communication
Both are in the Gateway skills list, and postings ask for strong written and verbal communication. Expect to explain your answer, not just reach it.
Interest in the field
Gateway wants demonstrated interest in consulting and the life sciences. Practice postings name the sector they serve, so know it before you interview.
Curiosity and ideas
Its early career page says interns bring curiosity and new ways of thinking, and invites early talent to contribute ideas as a young, entrepreneurial firm.
Its five values
Respect, integrity, innovation, stewardship and excellence, which its careers page calls its guiding stars. Have a story for at least two.
Eligibility for clearance
Federal roles can require it: a USDOT transportation posting asks for the ability to obtain and maintain a Federal or DoD Public Trust and prefers an active one.

Guidehouse's process, step by step
The first five steps are from Guidehouse's internship page. The Gateway route is its separate program for advanced degree candidates in life sciences.

Government and public sector3 questions
The goal is the mission and the budget, not profit.
A state agency's backlog of benefit claims has doubled in a year. How would you clear it?
What a strong answer does
Split it into more claims coming in and fewer going out. Then find the step where cases wait longest before suggesting staff, process or technology fixes.
A city wants to cut traffic deaths in half. Where would you start?
What a strong answer does
Break deaths down by where, when and who before picking fixes. Rank fixes by lives saved per dollar and say which data you would ask for first. Practice it, see a model answer
A federal department must cut its operating budget by 10% without hurting service. What would you look at?
What a strong answer does
Map the budget into its largest buckets, then find cuts that don't touch frontline service first. Say what service measure you would protect.
Health, energy and financial services5 questions
Tie each idea to a number the client is judged on.
A hospital's emergency room wait times have doubled. What is going on?
What a strong answer does
Follow a patient from arrival to discharge and find where time grew. Check whether more patients are arriving or beds are freeing up more slowly. Practice it, see a model answer
A drugmaker is launching a new treatment. How should it set the price?
What a strong answer does
Start from the value to patients and payers against today's treatment, then check what payers will cover. Give a range and the reason for it. Practice it, see a model answer
A utility must get half its power from clean sources by 2035. How would you plan it?
What a strong answer does
Size the gap in MWh, then compare sources by cost per MWh and how fast each can be built. End with an order of moves and the biggest risk.
A bank's compliance costs doubled in three years. How would you bring them down?
What a strong answer does
Split cost into people, technology and outside help, and find which grew most. Look for manual review work that better alert rules could cut, without weakening controls.
A defense program is 18 months behind schedule. How would you get it back on track?
What a strong answer does
Find the few tasks on the critical path driving the delay. Weigh adding people, cutting scope or changing order, and say what each does to cost and risk.
Fit questions4 questions
Answer with one real example: the situation, what you did and the result.
Why Guidehouse, and why this practice?
What a strong answer does
Name the practice you applied to and something specific it works on, then link it to your own experience. Early career hires join one team, so a vague answer stands out. Practice it, see a model answer
Tell me about a time you worked through a problem with no clear answer.
What a strong answer does
Show how you structured it, what you assumed and how you checked. A Guidehouse federal posting names tackling unstructured problems. Practice it, see a model answer
Tell me about a time you worked with someone who saw things differently.
What a strong answer does
Say what each side wanted, how you found common ground and what came of it. Respect is the first of Guidehouse's five values. Practice it, see a model answer
Tell me about a time you explained something complex to a non-expert.
What a strong answer does
Pick a real moment, show how you found the one point that mattered to them, and what they did with it. That is the so what in practice.
More to prepare with
Mistakes to avoid at Guidehouse
Ending on numbers without the so what
A Gateway participant says learning to communicate the so what was one of the best skills they built. Say what your result means for the client and what they should do.
Profit frameworks for a government client
Many Guidehouse clients are agencies. Structure around mission, budget, service levels and rules, not revenue and market share.
Not knowing the practice you applied to
Early career hires join a team aligned to their interests rather than a rotation. Know what that team does and who its clients are.
Ignoring the clearance line
A federal posting we read requires the ability to obtain a Public Trust, while its Life Sciences campus posting lists no clearance. Read the posting and be ready to talk about eligibility.
Trusting a message from the wrong domain
Guidehouse says official recruiting email comes only from @guidehouse.com or guidehouse@myworkday.com, and it never charges fees.
How to prepare for a Guidehouse interview
What Guidehouse's own pages point to, then steps we suggest.
From its pages
Read your practice's work
Its site lists industries from Communities, Energy & Infrastructure to Defense & Security and Health. Read two or three of your practice's case studies before the interview.
From Guidehouse: home.
From its pages
Learn its values
Respect, integrity, innovation, stewardship and excellence. Prepare one story for each of two or three.
From Guidehouse: careers.
From its pages
Check the posting's requirements
Read the degree, experience and clearance lines. A Life Sciences campus posting, for instance, asks for 0 years of experience and an advanced degree.
Our suggestion
Practice cases in your field
Run at least three cases in the industry of the team you applied to, ending each with a decision and its so what.
Our suggestion
Drill cost per unit math
Cost per MW, per claim or per patient decides most public sector and utility cases. Practice until it's quick and spoken aloud.
Our suggestion
Build a story bank
Six stories (ambiguity, a disagreement, a mistake, leading, explaining something complex, why consulting) cover most fit questions.
