Consulting target schools, from the firms' own campus pages

McKinsey, BCG and Bain don't publish a list of target schools. What they do publish is a campus recruiting page for many of the schools they recruit at. As of October 27, 2026, 32 US undergraduate schools and 20 US MBA programs have a page at all three firms, and 130 US colleges, MBA programs and group pages have one at one firm or more. Students anywhere can still apply online and join the firms' open programs. Whatever your school, the case interview decides the offer. Soreno, an AI voice interview practice app for consulting and finance, runs a free sample case out loud with no sign-up.

Updated

  • No firm publishes a target list. McKinsey says it recruits from many schools, some of which have a dedicated page.
  • 32 US colleges at all three. Including Harvard, Penn, Stanford, Michigan, Duke and UT Austin, A to Z in the table.
  • 20 US MBA programs at all three. Each has a campus page at McKinsey, BCG and Bain.
  • Bain covers the most: 89 US colleges. BCG has 50 US undergraduate pages and McKinsey 46.
  • Any school can apply. BCG says it hires from a range of academic backgrounds. McKinsey's bar for an interview is the same everywhere.

What a target school means

Target school is an informal term for a school where a firm recruits on campus. Here is what the firms' own pages say, read October 27, 2026.

  • Campus pages, not a list

McKinsey says it recruits from many schools and institutions, some of which have a dedicated page, and sends everyone else to their country career page. BCG and Bain each keep a school search with a page per campus.

  • A team for the school

BCG says many schools have campus recruiting teams that include BCG consultants who are alumni of that school. Almost every Bain school page says it has a dedicated team for that school.

  • One bar for everyone

McKinsey's FAQ says the standards for getting an interview and an offer are the same globally. BCG says it hires candidates from a range of academic backgrounds and looks for strong academic performance.

  • Any degree counts

A Bain recruiter writes that Bain considers applications from all degree types and subjects, and that it looks for potential, not industry experience.

McKinsey from its McKinsey on Campus search, BCG from its on-campus lists, Bain from its school pages. A school missing here may still host firm events, so check with your career office.

From any school: what to do

The application is online for everyone. What a campus page gives you, you can build yourself. The order is our advice, the facts are the firms'.

Show the five steps
  1. First

    Check each firm's school search

Look for your school at McKinsey, BCG and Bain. A page means a campus team and events you can sign up for. No page means you use the firm's general pages.

    From McKinsey, BCG and Bain.

  2. Freshman or sophomore year

Join the programs open to any school

McKinsey Edge (November 4 to December 3, 2026) is a virtual series for undergrads graduating between December 2028 and August 2029. BCG Launch (November 9, 2026 to February 17, 2027) is open to undergrads at any US or Canadian school. Bain's sophomore programs take applications until November 30, 2026.

    From McKinsey, BCG and Bain.

  3. Before you apply

    Network with intent

Alumni from your school at each firm, people you met at events, your consulting club. Ask for 15 minutes of advice, never a job.

Consulting networking: who to reach and what to say
  4. When applications open

    Apply online, on time

Every firm takes applications on its careers site. Know the dates for your year, since MBB undergrad deadlines have come early in recent cycles.

    Consulting recruiting timeline
  5. Interviews

    Practice cases out loud

The test and the case rounds are the same for every school. Start with a free sample case, then do several full cases a week.

7 questions to practice, from any school

The fit questions every consulting candidate gets, plus one that comes up more when your school sends few people into consulting. Our wording.

Fit questions4 questions

Asked of every candidate.

  1. Walk me through your background and why consulting.

    What a strong answer does

Two minutes, in order, ending on why you're in the room. Practice it, see a model answer

  2. Why consulting?

    What a strong answer does

Two specific reasons tied to your own experience, not the job description. Practice it, see a model answer

  3. Why this firm?

    What a strong answer does

Something you learned from its people, not its website. Practice it, see a model answer

  4. Tell me about a time you led a group to a result.

    What a strong answer does

Your own actions, a number for the result and what you'd change. Practice it, see a model answer

Cases2 questions

The same for every school.

  1. Your client is a regional grocery chain. Profits are down 20% over two years. How would you structure the problem?

    What a strong answer does

Split profit into revenue and costs, say where you'd start and why. Practice it, see a model answer

  2. How many gas stations are there in the US?

    What a strong answer does

Pick a clean top-down or bottom-up path and sanity-check the answer. Practice it, see a model answer

When your school sends few consultants1 question

Asked more often when the firm doesn't recruit on your campus.

  1. Not many people from your school go into consulting. How did you get here?

    What a strong answer does

Say what you did on your own, such as the programs you joined, the people you called and the cases you practiced. One minute, no apology.

Every school gets the same case, practice it out loud

Soreno's AI interviewer runs full consulting cases out loud, asks follow-ups, checks your math and scores every case. Try a sample case with no sign-up, or start your free week.

Questions people ask

What are the target schools for consulting?

No firm publishes a list. Going by the firms' own campus pages, 32 US colleges have a page at McKinsey, BCG and Bain: Brigham Young University, Brown University, Carnegie Mellon University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Duke University, Emory University, Georgetown University, Georgia Tech, Harvard University, Indiana University, MIT, Northwestern University, Ohio State University, Princeton University, Stanford University, UC Berkeley, University of Chicago, University of Florida, University of Michigan, University of Minnesota, University of North Carolina, University of Notre Dame, University of Pennsylvania, University of Southern California, University of Texas at Austin, University of Virginia, University of Washington, Vanderbilt University, Washington University in St. Louis and Yale University.

What are the MBB target schools for MBAs?

No firm publishes a list. Going by the firms' own campus pages, 20 US MBA programs have a page at all three firms: Berkeley Haas, Carnegie Mellon Tepper, Chicago Booth, Columbia Business School, Cornell Johnson, Dartmouth Tuck, Duke Fuqua, Emory Goizueta, Harvard Business School, Michigan Ross, Minnesota Carlson, MIT Sloan, Northwestern Kellogg, NYU Stern, Stanford GSB, UT Austin McCombs, UVA Darden, Washington Foster, Wharton and Yale SOM.

Do McKinsey, BCG and Bain publish a list of target schools?

No. They publish campus recruiting pages for the schools they recruit at, through a school search on each careers site. McKinsey says some of the schools it recruits from have a dedicated page.

Does a campus page mean the firm hires a lot of students from that school?

Not on its own. A page shows the firm has a recruiting team and events for the school. The firms don't publish how many they hire from each one.

Can you get into McKinsey, BCG or Bain from a non-target school?

Yes. Every firm takes applications online, McKinsey says its standards for an interview and an offer are the same globally, and BCG says it hires from a range of academic backgrounds. BCG Launch is open to undergrads at any US or Canadian school.

What is a semi-target school for consulting?

An informal term for a school where some firms recruit on campus but not all. No firm defines it. The table above shows which of the three firms has a page for each school.

Do consulting firms recruit at HBCUs?

McKinsey and BCG each have one campus page for Historically Black Colleges and Universities as a group. Bain has its own pages for Howard, Morehouse, Spelman, Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern.

Why isn't my school on this page?

This page lists US schools that have their own page at McKinsey, BCG or Bain as of October 27, 2026. A school without one may still host firm events, and every firm has general pages and online applications for students anywhere.
