The Instacart product manager interview, and its APM program

Instacart's APM program, an 18-month rotational program, hires through four steps: an application, a take-home product challenge, a series of virtual interviews with the Product team and product leaders, and a decision at the end of June. The Instacart pages we read give no steps for experienced PM roles. Its AI guidelines allow AI for preparing, but not in live interviews unless explicitly requested. We build Soreno, an AI voice interview practice app. Before the take-home, read our product sense interview guide for how to pick a user and a problem, free and with no sign-up.

Instacart's AI rules for candidates

Instacart publishes Candidate Guidelines for AI Usage. It says nearly 80% of its new code is AI-assisted, so the rules ask you to show your own thinking, not to avoid AI. The short version: use AI as a helper, not a substitute, be yourself and be transparent.

What's allowed at each stage4 stages
  1. Applying

Allowed: say your real experience better

Using AI to articulate your skills and experience is fine. Using it to create experiences or achievements that didn't happen is not.

  2. Take-home assessments

    Allowed: organize and proofread

Asking AI to help organize your thoughts or proofread is fine. Having AI complete the task or generate the deliverable is not.

  3. Preparing

    Allowed: research and practice

Using AI to research Instacart or practice interviewing is fine. Copying AI-written responses or using AI scripts in interviews is not.

  4. Live interviews

    Not allowed unless requested

No AI use in live interviews unless explicitly requested as part of a skills presentation. Instacart wants to hear your reasoning in the moment.

If AI shaped your take-homeBe ready to explain
  1. Instacart asks

    How you used it

Be prepared to explain how AI improved your work, how you handled its inputs, including hallucinations or mistakes, and any creative ways you used it.

What Instacart looks for

From the APM program page and the Product team page.

  • Passion for technology and product design

Instacart says APMs show a deep passion for technology and product design, leadership potential, strong communication skills, and excitement for Instacart and its mission.

  • All four sides of the marketplace

Instacart's products connect customers, shoppers, retailers and brands. Instacart describes the product challenge as a chance to show you can build products that solve key problems for those four groups.

  • New to product is fine

Instacart says the APM program is for recent graduates, aspiring product managers and people making a career switch, from a diverse set of backgrounds.

  • Your own thinking

Its AI guidelines say the hiring process is designed to understand how you think, solve problems and communicate.

How Instacart hires APMs

From Instacart's APM program page, for the 2026-27 program. The pages we read give no process for experienced PM roles, so ask your recruiter if you're applying to one.

  1. Step 1

    Apply

For the 2026-27 program, applications opened March 9, 2026 and closed at 11:59pm PT on March 20, 2026. Watch the APM page for the next cycle.

  2. Step 2

    Product challenge

A take-home assignment. Instacart says it shows your ability to think strategically about building products that solve key problems for its customers, shoppers, retailers and brands.

  3. Step 3

    Virtual interviews

A series of virtual interviews with members of the Product team and product leaders.

  4. Step 4

    Decision

Chosen candidates are told at the end of June.

  5. Step 5

    The program starts

In early August 2026 for the 2026-27 class.

Instacart's AI guidelines say any stage with its own AI rules will be made clear upfront.

12 Instacart-style PM questions to practice

Soreno's own questions, one group for each side of Instacart's marketplace. None are Instacart's own. Under each, what a strong answer covers.

Customers

People ordering groceries.

  1. How would you help customers find deals they already qualify for?

Picks where in the journey deals get missed and measures savings used, not deals shown.

  2. An item is out of stock after the order is placed. How should the product handle it?

Weighs asking the customer, letting the shopper choose and refunding, with the customer's trust as the measure.

  3. How would you grow weekly grocery orders among new parents?

Starts from their routine, picks one pain, such as repeat buys, and says how you'd know it worked.

Shoppers

People picking and delivering orders.

  1. Design a feature that helps shoppers earn more per hour.

Finds where time is lost in a batch, proposes one fix and checks it doesn't slow delivery.

  2. Shopper ratings fell in one city. What do you look at?

Separates store problems from shopper problems and app problems before proposing anything.

  3. How would you make substitutions easier for a shopper in a crowded store?

Thinks about one-handed phone use and how fast the customer answers.

Retailers and brands

Stores and the brands they sell.

  1. How would you help a grocer get more online orders without hurting in-store sales?

Names what the grocer cares about, measures total sales and picks one tool to test.

  2. A brand wants to advertise on the app. How do you keep ads useful to customers?

Balances relevance, how many ads a page can hold, and both sides' measures.

  3. What would you build to help a store's staff handle online orders faster?

Watches the in-store workflow first and picks the slowest step.

You

Stories for the interviews.

  1. Why product management, and why Instacart?

Ties a real experience to a problem in grocery, which Instacart calls underpenetrated online.

  2. Tell me about something you built or shipped.

The problem, your part, the result and what you'd change. Side projects count for APMs.

  3. Walk me through your take-home: what did you cut, and why?

Defends the trade-offs, and if AI helped, says how, as Instacart's guidelines ask.

Mistakes to avoid

The first two come from Instacart's AI guidelines. The other three are our advice.

  • Using AI in a live interview

Not permitted unless it's explicitly requested as part of a skills presentation.

  • A take-home AI wrote

Instacart doesn't allow having AI complete the task, and asks you to explain any AI use.

  • Solving for customers only

Instacart's description of the challenge names four groups. A fix that costs shoppers or retailers needs a line on how you'd handle it.

  • No measure of success

Every product answer needs a metric and a guardrail.

  • Generic passion

Instacart looks for excitement about its mission. Point to a grocery problem you actually care about.

Questions people ask

How long is the Instacart APM program?

18 months, with two rotations across Instacart's four-sided marketplace. Its own example: a first rotation helping customers discover new products and a second helping shoppers earn more.

How big is Instacart's APM class?

Instacart says the class size is intentionally small, about 10.

What is the Instacart APM product challenge?

A take-home assignment where you show you can think strategically about products that solve key problems for Instacart's customers, shoppers, retailers and brands.

When do Instacart APM applications open?

For the 2026-27 program they opened March 9, 2026 and closed March 20, 2026. Check the APM page for the next cycle.

Can I use AI in an Instacart interview?

Not in live interviews, unless it's explicitly requested as part of a skills presentation. Instacart allows AI for research, practice, polishing your resume and organizing a take-home, but not for writing it.

Who can apply to the Instacart APM program?

Instacart says recent graduates, aspiring product managers and people looking to switch careers into product.

Does Instacart publish its experienced PM interview process?

Not on the pages we read in October 2026. Ask your recruiter, and read the AI guidelines, which apply to every role.

Which product teams does Instacart have?

Its Product team page lists five: Ads, which helps brands reach customers online and in-store, Platform (order management, payments, fraud prevention and developer tools), Fulfillment, Connected Stores, which builds in-store technology for grocers, and Core Experience, the online shopping journey from finding items to checkout and delivery.
