What HBS says it is looking for

HBS publishes no interview rubric. It does say what the interview is for and what its students share.

  • Ready for the case method

HBS says the interview is meant to find out whether you will thrive in case discussion and be a good member of the community.

  • Business-minded

An interest in helping organizations succeed, in any sector. HBS looks for interpersonal skills, quantitative ability and how you plan to have an impact.

  • Leadership-focused

You don't need a formal title. HBS says leadership can show up in extracurriculars, community work or your job.

  • Growth-oriented

Curiosity, listening and taking part in discussion. HBS looks at how you have grown and how you engage with the world.

How the HBS interview runs

For the full-time MBA, Class of 2029 (entering fall 2027), as HBS describes it as of October 2026.

  1. Application

Apply in Round 1 or Round 2

Round 1 closed September 9, 2026. Round 2 closes January 5, 2027 at 12:00 PM ET. You may apply in one round per year.

  2. 4 to 6 weeks later

    Invitation

HBS says invitations usually come four to six weeks after the deadline. Not everyone is interviewed, and no one is admitted without an interview. As of October 2026, its logistics page opened booking on Wednesday, October 7, first come, first served.

  3. Interview day

30 minutes with the Admissions Board

One Board member who has reviewed your application, tailored to you. An Observer from senior staff may sit in and write a short note, with no effect either way.

  4. Within 24 hours

    Post-Interview Reflection

A written reflection submitted in your application, with a guide of 300 to 450 words. HBS says it is not another formal essay.

  5. Decision

    Notification day

Round 1 decisions on December 10, 2026. Round 2 decisions on March 25, 2027. HBS says more than half of interviewed candidates are admitted.

12 questions to practice for HBS

HBS does not publish its questions. Because your interviewer has read your file, expect questions about your own resume and choices. These are Soreno's practice prompts.

Your resume and choices

The interview starts from what you have already written.

  1. Walk me through the biggest change of direction on your resume and whether it was the right call.

Name the reason you moved at the time, what you gave up, and what you would weigh differently now. Then give an honest verdict on it.

  2. Walk me through what you actually do in a typical week in your current job.

Pick concrete tasks, who you work with and one decision that is yours. Titles and team names say little to someone outside your field.

  3. Walk me through your resume.

Two minutes, in order, with the reason behind each move. Stop where the MBA comes in so the interviewer can choose where to dig.

  4. Tell me about a decision you made that you would make differently today.

Show what you knew then, what you learned since and how it changed the way you decide.

Goals and why HBS

  1. Why an MBA, and why now?

Link a specific goal to a gap you can't close where you are, and say what makes this the right year.

  2. What are your short-term and long-term goals after the MBA?

A first role you can name, a longer aim that follows from it, and the reason you care.

  3. Why is our program the right fit for you?

Tie the case method and the parts of HBS you would use to how you learn and what you want to do. Avoid a list of rankings.

Leadership and people

  1. Tell me about a time you led a group of people who didn't report to you.

Show how you got buy-in without authority and what changed because of it. HBS says leadership needs no formal title.

  2. Tell me about the most critical feedback you've ever received.

Quote the feedback plainly, then show the change you made and how someone could see it.

  3. Tell me about a time you worked closely with someone very different from you.

Be specific about the difference and what you learned from it, the kind of thing that makes a section discussion better.

The close and the reflection

  1. If you sat down to write your post-interview reflection right now, what would you add to what we talked about today?

Point to something real from the conversation and add what it didn't reach. This is the habit the 24-hour reflection rewards.

  2. Before we wrap up, is there anything else you'd like the admissions committee to know?

One short, new point or a brief thank you. HBS lets you share application updates at the interview, so a real update fits here.

HBS rules that can end an application

HBS says breaking these policies cancels the interview and withdraws the application.

  • Recording the interview

Neither you nor the Board member may record it.

  • AI tools during the interview

Transcription, summary and note-taking apps are banned. Close them before you join.

  • Anyone else in the room

Only you and the Board member may take part. On Zoom, pick a private place where you will be alone for the full 30 minutes.

How to prepare for the HBS interview

HBS tells candidates to relax and be ready to talk about themselves. This is how to make that easy.

  1. When the invite arrives

    Book early

Slots are first come, first served, and changes are discouraged. Choose campus, a hub city or Zoom. HBS says the format does not affect your candidacy.

  2. The week before

    Reread your own application

Your interviewer has. For every line, know why you made the move and what you would say if asked to go one level deeper.

  3. The week before

    Practice out loud, with follow-ups

Thirty minutes of rapid questions rewards short answers that hold up when pressed. Answer, then take a follow-up on the weakest part. Soreno's AI interviewer asks one on every answer, at any hour.

    How Soreno's MBA practice works
  4. Interview day

    Set up the room

Business attire. A private room with no apps running. If the connection fails, HBS will try to reconnect or reschedule.

  5. After

    Write the reflection fresh

HBS suggests letting the interview sink in first. It says a reflection that looks written before the interview will raise a flag, and it is far more forgiving of typos. Write it yourself within 24 hours, with no outside help.

From HBS interview logistics.

Practice the follow-ups before your 30 minutes

Soreno's AI interviewer asks MBA admissions questions out loud, presses on your answers the way a reader of your file would, and scores each one out of 100, quoting your own words. Soreno is not affiliated with Harvard Business School.

Questions people ask

Who interviews you at HBS?

HBS says all interviews are conducted by a member of the MBA Admissions Board, who has reviewed your application.

Is the HBS interview blind?

No. HBS says the Board member has reviewed your application and the interview is tailored to you.

How long is the HBS interview?

30 minutes. Each applicant may register for one slot.

What is the Post-Interview Reflection?

A written reflection due within 24 hours of the interview, with a guide of 300 to 450 words. HBS describes it as a reflection after a meeting, not another formal essay.

What does an HBS interview Observer do?

A senior member of HBS staff or the Interview Board may listen and write a short assessment. HBS says having one gives no advantage or disadvantage.

Does it matter when or where I interview?

HBS says no. The process and evaluation are the same on campus, off campus and on Zoom, and the timing of your invitation says nothing about your application.

What share of interviewed HBS applicants are admitted?

HBS says more than half of candidates interviewed are admitted. It does not publish an exact figure on that page.

Can I switch from Zoom to an in-person interview?

HBS says it can move an in-person interview to Zoom if travel or illness gets in the way, but it can't move a Zoom interview to in person.

What should I wear?

HBS says business attire, for both you and the interviewer. Your Zoom background is not assessed.
